Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Dynasty

Five years later.

The grand ballroom of the Lake Forest estate was filled with light, laughter, and music once again—not for a charity gala, and not for a desperate bargain made in the dark.

It was Oliver’s eleventh birthday party.

The room was packed with kids from his private school, their parents, close friends, and trusted associates. At the center of the room, now a tall, bright-eyed eleven-year-old with a sharp grin and his mother Serena’s spirit shining clearly in his features, Oliver stood blowing out the candles on a massive chocolate cake while everyone cheered.

In the corner near the tall arched windows, Preston stood watching his son with a quiet, immovable sense of peace.

He wore a dark tailored suit, his hair touched with a few distinguished silver strands at the temples that only made him look more formidable.

A soft pair of arms slid around his waist from behind, and a familiar, comforting weight pressed against his back.

Preston didn't need to turn around. He covered her hands with his own, his thumb stroking the platinum band on her finger.

"He's growing up too fast," Emma murmured, resting her chin against his shoulder as she watched Oliver laugh with his friends.

"He's strong," Preston replied softly. "He has his mother's resilience."

Emma turned slightly, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. "He has his father's stubbornness, too."

Preston chuckled, turning in her embrace to face her. Emma looked stunning in an emerald-green silk dress that caught the crystal light of the chandeliers, her dark hair cascading down her back in elegant waves, her eyes shining with the same fierce, unyielding intelligence that had saved them all five years ago.

"Remember when you walked into this room in a cheap maid's uniform and blackmailed me into marriage?" Preston teased, a low rumble of amusement in his chest.

"Remember when you acted like you were doing me a favor by marrying Chicago's most terrifying mob boss?" Emma retorted instantly, a playful spark dancing in her eyes.

Preston wrapped his arms securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, shutting out the noise of the party, the cameras, and the sprawling empire outside.

"I wasn't doing you a favor, Emma," Preston whispered, his voice dropping into a register meant only for her. "I was saving my own life."

Emma smiled, sliding her arms up around his neck, standing on her tip-toes to press her lips softly to his.

Across the room, Oliver caught sight of them, rolled his eyes with all the exaggerated drama of an eleven-year-old, and then laughed as one of his friends threw a piece of confetti at him.

The ghosts of the past were gone, washed away by rain, time, and absolute devotion. The Hale dynasty wasn't built on fear anymore. It was built on survival, grace, and a love that had defied the darkest corners of Chicago.
