Chapter 4 - The Vows of the Damned

The private chapel on the estate grounds looked less like a house of worship and more like a stone fortress carved out of cathedral-grade limestone, lit only by tall beeswax tapers and the pale gray light of a breaking Chicago dawn.

There were no guests. There were no flowers, no organ music, no cheering crowd.

There was only Viktor Vance standing by the altar with a stack of legal documents, a tired municipal judge Preston had pulled out of bed three hours earlier with a nocturnal phone call he couldn't refuse, and Preston standing beside Emma in front of the stone cross.

Emma wore a simple cream-colored wool dress that had been hastily pulled from a high-end boutique delivery service Preston ordered at 3:00 AM. Her hair was down now, falling in soft, dark waves around her shoulders, framing a face that looked impossibly young against the gothic stones of the chapel.

Preston wore a crisp black shirt with the top button undone, his jacket draped over a pew behind them.

"Do you, Preston Hale, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?" the judge asked, his voice trembling slightly as he looked up into the icy blue eyes of the man who effectively owned half the county.

"I do," Preston said. His voice was steady, flat, and absolute.

The judge turned nervously toward Emma. "Do you, Emma Carter, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

Emma looked at Preston. She saw the wealth, the power, the terrifying legacy of violence and control that surrounded him like an aura. But she also saw the way his hand had unconsciously twitched toward the Chesterfield sofa every ten minutes to check on Oliver, who was sleeping peacefully in the adjoining sacristy under nurse supervision.

She saw a father who would burn the world down to keep his son safe.

"I do," Emma said clearly.

"By the power vested in me by the State of Illinois, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the judge recited in a rush, eager to close his leather binder and get out of the room. "You may... uh, you may kiss the bride."

Preston didn't grab her awkwardly or hesitate. He stepped forward, cupping the side of her face with a hand that was warm, strong, and calloused from a lifetime of handling power. His thumb brushed lightly over her cheekbone, right over the faint scar near her jaw.

His lips brushed hers. It wasn't a passionate kiss born of romance or whirlwind courtship; it was a cold, sealing contract written in blood and mutual necessity.

We are tied now, the kiss seemed to say. Cross one of us, and you deal with both.

When he pulled back, Emma’s breath hitched just slightly.

"Sign the registry," Preston instructed quietly, stepping aside.

Emma picked up the heavy fountain pen and signed her new name—Emma Hale—across the parchment lines.

As soon as the ink dried, Viktor stepped forward, closing the leather folder with a sharp snap. "The papers are filed electronically with the county clerk's emergency night desk. It’s official. You two are legally bound."

Preston turned to face his new wife, sliding a heavy platinum band embedded with a single, flawless diamond onto her left ring finger. It looked heavy against her hand, a glowing shackle of absolute protection.

"Welcome to the family, Emma," Preston said, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his mouth. "Now... let's go see what your father left us in that ledger."
