Chapter 2 - The Judas in the Family

"Julian," Adrian whispered.

The name tasted like venom on his tongue.

Julian Vale was Adrian’s cousin, his late uncle's only son, and the financial director of the Vale syndicate’s legitimate holdings. Julian had grown up in the same mansion, eaten at the same dinner table, and shared the same blood. When Adrian took control of the family business six years ago after his father’s assassination, he had handed Julian the keys to their real estate and shipping empires, trusting him implicitly with the financial heart of the organization.

"Are you certain?" Adrian’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the weight of a death sentence.

Marcus held up the burner phone, tapping the screen with a gloved thumb. "The encrypted messaging app was still open when he died. Three outgoing messages to the Volkov syndicate’s primary lieutenant in Chicago. The last message was sent four minutes before the ambush: 'Target in the blue SUV. Elderly woman in the back. Finish it.'"

Marcus paused, pointing to the contact alias saved on the burner phone. "The alias is linked to a private server hosted out of Julian’s penthouse in Gold Coast. I had my tech guy trace the encryption key while the paramedics were loading Emily. It's his signature, Adrian. No one else has those credentials."

Margaret let out a ragged sob from her wheelchair, covering her mouth with her liver-spotted hands. "Julian? My nephew? Oh God... why? Why would he do this?"

"Because Julian has been quietly bleeding our offshore accounts dry for eighteen months," Marcus explained grimly, his face dark. "He lost over forty million dollars in bad overseas investments and illegal gambling dens in Macau. He knew Adrian was auditing the books next week. If Adrian found out, Julian was a dead man. The only way out for him was to align with the Volkov family, wipe out Adrian and Mrs. Vale, and take control of the syndicate under the Volkovs' protection."

Adrian didn't speak. He stood frozen in the dim, smoke-filled light of the underground garage, his mind racing through every interaction he had shared with his cousin over the last six months.

Julian had been the one to suggest St. Catherine Medical Center for Margaret’s treatments.

Julian had insisted on organizing the specific security detail for today.

Julian had called Adrian twenty minutes before they left the mansion, asking for confirmation on which vehicle Margaret would be sitting in, claiming he wanted to ensure her favorite cushions were placed inside.

It hadn't been a nephew checking on his elderly aunt. It had been an assassin marking a target.

"Where is he right now?" Adrian asked. The coldness in his tone made even Marcus, a hardened killer, take a subtle step back.

"He’s at the family estate in Oak Brook," Marcus replied. "He thinks the hit succeeded. He’s waiting for the Volkovs to confirm that both you and your mother are dead before he announces an emergency council meeting to assume leadership."

Adrian looked back toward the heavy emergency room doors. Through the frosted glass, he could see doctors and nurses sprinting back and forth, their frantic shadows moving against the harsh fluorescent lights. Emily was behind those doors, her heart bleeding out on a cold metal table, fighting for every breath because Julian had wanted to sell his family for forty million dollars.

Adrian reached out and took the burner phone from Marcus’s hand. He crushed the device in his bare grip until the screen cracked, throwing the ruined plastic onto the concrete.

"Marcus," Adrian said softly.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Take my mother to the safehouse in Barrington. Lock it down. Double the perimeter guard. Put twenty men on the roof. If anyone approaches without my personal authorization, kill them."

"And you?" Marcus asked.

Adrian looked down at his blood-soaked hands. Emily’s warm blood was already hardening into dark, crusted scales across his knuckles.

"I’m going to go see my cousin," Adrian said.

"Adrian, you're bleeding, and the police will be here in three minutes," Marcus urged. "Let me send a hit squad to Oak Brook. We can bring Julian to the warehouse."

"No," Adrian said, his voice flat, absolute. "He tried to murder my mother. He put five bullets into the only innocent person in my life. A hit squad is too merciful."

Adrian turned to his mother. He knelt down beside her wheelchair, disregarding the glass cutting into his knees. He took her trembling hands in his bloodied ones.

"Stay with Marcus, Mom," Adrian said softly. "I will make sure she survives. I promise you."

"Adrian... don't let anger turn you into a monster," Margaret wept, clutching his sleeves.

"The monster was already there, Mom," Adrian replied quietly, standing up. "Julian just opened the cage."

He walked away from the scene of the massacre, stepping past the dead bodies of his bodyguards, past the smoking wrecks of the SUVs, and strode out toward a dark, unmarked sedan parked in the shadows near the garage entrance.

He pulled open the driver's door, got inside, and fired up the powerful engine. As he drove out into the rainy Chicago afternoon, his phone buzzed on the console. It was an automated alert from St. Catherine's emergency trauma unit.

Patient: Carter, Emily. Status: Critical. Undergoing Emergency Thoracotomy.

Adrian slammed his foot onto the accelerator, the sedan roaring onto the expressway, leaving a trail of water and smoke behind him.

Thirty minutes later, the iron gates of the Vale estate in Oak Brook swung open automatically as Adrian’s sedan approached.

The estate was a sprawling, secluded mansion surrounded by fifty acres of private forest. To the outside world, it was a historic luxury property. To those in the underground, it was the fortified heart of the Vale syndicate.

Julian Vale was sitting in the grand leather armchair in the mansion’s mahogany-paneled library, a glass of thirty-year-old scotch in his hand. He was a handsome man of thirty-six, dressed in an expensive grey cashmere sweater, his hair impeccably styled. On the table beside him, a laptop displayed live financial feeds as he prepared to execute the wire transfers that would seal his deal with the Volkovs.

The double doors of the library didn't knock. They flew open with a violent crash that sent a crystal vase shattering across the hardwood floor.

Julian jumped out of his chair, spilling his scotch across his trousers. "What the hell—"

He stopped dead.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

He was covered in dried blood from his chest to his wrists. His shirt was torn, his eyes were bloodshot and dark as pitch, and a heavy, silenced pistol hung loosely in his right hand.

Julian’s face drained of color instantly. The glass in his hand slipped, shattering against the rug.

"A-Adrian..." Julian stammered, his voice jumping an octave. "You're... you're alive? Oh thank God! I heard rumors of a disturbance near St. Catherine's! I was sitting here losing my mind trying to reach you!"

Adrian stepped into the room, locking the heavy mahogany doors behind him with a quiet click.

He didn't speak. He walked slowly toward the bar, his shoes leaving dark, sticky smudges on the expensive Persian rug.

"Adrian, talk to me!" Julian panicked, taking three steps back until his legs hit the edge of the grand mahogany desk. "Is Aunt Margaret okay? Where are your guards? Why are you covered in blood?"

Adrian reached the bar, picked up a crystal decanter of bourbon, and poured himself two fingers of dark liquor. His hands were completely steady now. The frantic panic he had displayed in the parking garage had vanished, replaced by an icy, terrifying composure.

He drank the bourbon in one smooth draft.

"Emily Carter took five bullets, Julian," Adrian said softly, setting the glass down with a light clink.

Julian swallowed hard, sweating profusely now. "Who? The... the nurse? Oh Jesus, that's terrible. A civilian caught in the crossfire—"

"She threw herself over my mother," Adrian interrupted, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Five bullets. One in the shoulder. One in the side. One in the lower back. One in the abdomen. One below the ribs."

Adrian walked around the desk, stopping two feet away from his cousin.

"The shooter was using a custom military-grade assault rifle loaded with hollow-point rounds," Adrian continued, staring directly into Julian’s trembling eyes. "The kind of rounds that expand upon impact. The kind that rip internal organs to shreds."

"Adrian, I don't know why you're telling me this!" Julian cried out, raising his hands defensively. "The Volkovs must have followed you! They’ve been looking for an opportunity to strike for weeks! I had nothing to do with this!"

Adrian reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the crushed burner phone he had taken from the dead shooter, and tossed it onto the desk between them.

The cracked screen was dark, but the custom encryption chip sticking out of its side was unmistakable.

Julian’s eyes locked onto the chip, and his knees visibly buckled.

"You sold my mother to the Volkovs for forty million dollars," Adrian said flatly. "You gave them the route. You gave them the car assignment. You told them to finish her."

"Adrian... please!" Julian fell to his knees, clutching at Adrian’s blood-stained trousers, tears springing from his eyes. "They forced me! The Volkovs found out about the Macau debts! They threatened to kill my wife! They threatened to kill my children! I had no choice, Adrian! You have to believe me!"

Adrian looked down at his cousin begging on the floor. There was no pity in his eyes. Only absolute, cold disgust.

"You always were a terrible coward, Julian," Adrian said quietly. "You took the family's money, you squandered it on your greed, and when the bill came due, you offered up an old woman and an innocent girl to pay it."

"I'll give the money back! I'll give you everything!" Julian sobbed, bowing his head to the floor. "Just let me leave the city! I'll take my family and disappear to South America! You'll never see me again!"

Adrian raised the heavy, silenced pistol, pointing the barrel at the back of Julian’s head.

"If Emily Carter dies tonight," Adrian whispered, "I am going to slaughter every single member of the Volkov syndicate in this state. Every boss, every soldier, every driver, every lawyer. I will turn Chicago into a graveyard."

Julian trembled violently, weeping into the carpet. "Please, Adrian... please..."

"And you," Adrian added, "don't even get to watch it happen."

PHFFT.

A single suppressed gunshot echoed softly through the quiet library.

Julian Vale collapsed onto the rug, motionless.

Adrian stood over his cousin's corpse for three seconds. He didn't feel relief. He didn't feel vengeance. He felt only the icy, terrifying hole in his chest that burned for the woman currently lying on a steel table at St. Catherine Medical Center.

He dropped the gun onto the desk, turned around, unlocked the mahogany doors, and walked out of the mansion without looking back.
