Chapter 8 - The Proposal on the Water

Two days after the failed intrusion, the final remnants of the Volkov family in North America were permanently neutralized. Pavel Volkov was arrested by federal authorities at the airport in Montreal, charged with international conspiracy and attempted murder, ensuring the Russian syndicate was erased from existence entirely.

The lake house was repaired within twenty-four hours.

The security protocol was permanently upgraded, but the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of Lake Geneva returned as warm, crisp autumn days turned into cool, starry nights.

On a brilliant Saturday evening, the water of Lake Geneva was completely still, reflecting the dark, star-filled sky like a massive, liquid mirror.

Adrian had arranged a private vintage wooden yacht to take them out onto the water.

Margaret had excused herself early, claiming she was far too tired to go on a night cruise, leaving Adrian and Emily alone on the polished teak deck of the boat.

The yacht glided silently across the dark water, powered by an electric motor. Warm lanterns hung along the brass railings, casting a soft, golden glow over the deck. A table for two had been set near the stern, complete with fresh white roses, champagne, and a quiet dinner prepared by a private chef.

Emily sat at the table, wearing an elegant dark velvet dress that hugged her frame, her dark hair styled in soft waves around her shoulders. She looked healthy, radiant, and deeply at peace.

Adrian sat across from her, dressed in a sharp navy blazer and white shirt.

They dined in quiet, comfortable happiness, talking about Leo’s upcoming graduation, Margaret’s plans for a new community garden in Barrington, and the charitable medical foundation Adrian was establishing in Emily's name to provide free healthcare to low-income families in Chicago.

"You've done so much, Adrian," Emily said softly, nursing a glass of sparkling water as she looked out over the dark lake. "In just three months, you've transformed everything."

"I didn't transform anything, Emily," Adrian corrected gently, taking her hand across the white tablecloth. "You gave me a second chance at life. You saved my mother, and in doing so, you saved my soul."

Adrian stood up from his chair.

He walked around the table, reaching out his hand to guide her up from her seat.

Emily stood up, looking at him with curious, soft eyes. "Adrian? What is it?"

Adrian led her to the edge of the teak deck, right where the soft golden light of the lanterns met the dark, sparkling surface of the water.

He turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and entirely free of the dark tension that had once defined his life.

"When you were lying on that cold garage floor three months ago," Adrian began, his voice dropping into a low, deeply emotional register, "I made a promise to God. I promised that if you survived those five bullets, I would spend every single day of the rest of my life protecting you, honoring you, and loving you."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears in the lantern light.

Adrian slowly dropped onto one knee on the teak deck.

From his jacket pocket, he pulled out a small, velvet box. He pressed the catch, and the lid opened to reveal a magnificent, flawless three-carat oval diamond set in a simple, elegant band of platinum.

"Emily Carter," Adrian whispered, looking up into her dark, beautiful eyes with absolute, unshielded vulnerability. "You took five bullets to save my mother. You stood up to my darkness and brought me into the light. I don't want to live another second in a world where you aren't my wife."

He held the ring up toward her.

"Will you marry me?"

Emily covered her mouth with both hands, a soft sob escaping her lips. Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled over her lashes, trailing down her cheeks.

She didn't hesitate. She didn't pause.

"Yes," she wept softly, dropping to her knees right there on the wooden deck beside him. "Yes, Adrian! Of course yes!"

Adrian let out a breathless laugh, slipping the diamond ring onto her finger. The fit was absolute perfection.

He pulled her into his broad arms, lifting her off the deck as his mouth met hers in a passionate, joyful kiss. The dark waters of Lake Geneva rippled quietly around them, reflecting the lantern light as the man who had once been called the Devil of Lake Michigan held the woman who had transformed his world.
