Chapter 4 - The Clean Sweep

By eight o’clock the following morning, the Sterling estate was transformed into a command center of absolute corporate and legal retribution.
Marcus Sterling had not slept a single second.
While Lily slept peacefully in the master bedroom suite—a room Marcus had moved her to so she would be surrounded by her father’s presence—Marcus sat at the dining room table. The stained grape juice had been meticulously cleaned away by professional restoration specialists, and the cold room was now filled with heat and light.
Around the long mahogany table sat Marcus’s top legal team, led by Victoria Vance (no relation to Evelyn), a formidable, razor-sharp corporate attorney known as the most feared litigator in the tri-state area. Beside her sat forensic accountants, private investigators, and Marcus’s executive communications team.
“Where do we stand on the criminal charges, Victoria?” Marcus asked, sipping a cup of black coffee. His face was stone, his eyes laser-focused.
Victoria opened a thick leather binder. “Chief Bradley worked through the night with the District Attorney. Given the video evidence from your Swiss server, the DA has filed a fourteen-count criminal indictment against Evelyn Vance. The charges include First-Degree Child Endangerment, Aggravated Child Abuse, Grand Larceny exceeding two hundred thousand dollars, Identity Theft, and Extortion.”
“What is the maximum exposure?”
“Thirty-five years in state prison,” Victoria replied smoothly. “And because of the overwhelming nature of the evidence, the judge assigned to the arraignment has denied bail entirely. She will remain in county custody until trial.”
“Good,” Marcus said flatly. “Now tell me about her background. How did a monster like that pass the vetting process of an elite Manhattan placement agency?”
A private investigator named Vance Miller pushed a dossier across the table.
“That’s where the real story begins, Mr. Sterling,” Miller said grimly. “The placement agency, Elite Domestic Solutions, was compromised. Evelyn Vance wasn’t working alone. She has a brother, Richard Vance, who happens to be the senior background screening director at that very agency.”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “A family operation.”
“Exactly,” Miller explained. “Richard Vance systematically scrubbed Evelyn’s real criminal history—which included two previous sealed complaints of domestic theft and child neglect from wealthy families in Florida—and fabricated her glowing credentials. Together, they targeted high-net-worth, single-parent households where the primary breadwinner traveled extensively for business. Evelyn would get hired, isolate the children, divert household funds, steal untracked heirlooms, and Richard would take a fifty percent cut of the liquid assets.”
Marcus stood up slowly, leaning his hands on the table.
“Shut them down,” Marcus commanded coldly.
Victoria smiled—a sharp, predatory grin. “Already in motion, Marcus. I filed a civil racketeering lawsuit against Elite Domestic Solutions an hour ago. We obtained an emergency judicial order freezing all assets belonging to Richard Vance, Evelyn Vance, and the agency’s executive partners. Federal marshals are currently executing a search warrant at the agency’s Manhattan headquarters.”
“I want Richard Vance arrested before lunch,” Marcus added.
“The NYPD warrants squad is outside his Upper East Side apartment right now,” Miller confirmed, checking his phone. “He won’t even have time to finish his morning espresso.”
Marcus nodded in satisfaction. He turned to Mrs. Gable, who was standing quietly near the sideboard with a tray of fresh tea.
“Mrs. Gable,” Marcus said, his voice softening completely.
“Yes, Mr. Sterling?”
“Assemble the entire domestic staff in the grand foyer.”
Ten minutes later, the ten members of the estate’s domestic staff—the chef, the housekeepers, the groundskeepers, and the security team—stood in a neat line in the grand foyer. They looked anxious, uncertain of their fate after the chaotic events of the night.
Marcus walked down the line, stopping in front of them.
“I called you all here to say two things,” Marcus spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly across the space. “First, I owe every single one of you a profound apology.”
The staff blinked in surprise.
“In my grief over my wife’s passing, I blinded myself to the realities of my own home,” Marcus admitted, his tone filled with genuine humility and remorse. “I put my faith in a monster and gave her authority that she abused to terrorize my daughter and threaten all of you. For my negligence, I am deeply sorry.”
Mrs. Gable wiped a tear from her eye. “Mr. Sterling… you were grieving, and she lied to all of us—”
“That is no excuse,” Marcus said firmly. “Which brings me to my second point. Every member of this staff who was threatened, intimidated, or forced to endure Evelyn Vance’s tyranny will receive an immediate fifty percent permanent salary increase.”
A collective gasp echoed down the line of staff members.
“Furthermore,” Marcus continued, “I am establishing a fully funded college trust fund for all of your children and grandchildren. You stayed, you cared for this house, and Mrs. Gable fought to protect my daughter despite the threats to her own livelihood. From this day forward, you are not just employees of this estate. You are under the personal protection of the Sterling family.”
The chef began to weep silently, and Mrs. Gable stepped forward, impulsively wrapping her arms around Marcus in a tight embrace.
“Thank you, sir,” Mrs. Gable sobbed. “Thank you.”

Marcus held the old woman gently, patting her back.
“Now,” Marcus smiled softly. “Let’s go build a dollhouse.”
