Chapter 9 - The First Christmas

A month later.
Christmas Eve arrived at the Sterling estate, transforming the vast mansion into a magical winter wonderland.
Massive evergreen garlands wrapped around the grand marble staircase, shimmering with warm golden lights and red velvet bows. A towering twenty-foot Fraser fir tree stood in the grand living room, decorated with thousands of sparkling crystal ornaments and silver tinsel. The grand marble fireplace crackled with a warm, roaring fire, filling the room with the comforting scent of pine and burning oak.
The house was filled with warmth, music, and the delicious aroma of roasted turkey and freshly baked gingerbread cookies.
In the living room, four-year-old Lily sat on the plush carpet beneath the glowing tree, dressed in a beautiful red velvet Christmas dress. She was surrounded by a mountain of wrapped presents, but her eyes were glued to a heavy, silver-framed photograph sitting on the side table.
The photograph showed Eleanor, smiling radiantly in a sunlit garden, holding a newborn Lily in her arms.
Marcus walked into the room, carrying two warm mugs of hot chocolate topped with fluffy marshmallows. He sat down on the carpet beside his daughter, setting the mugs on a coaster.
“What are you looking at, sweetie?” Marcus asked softly, wrapping his arm around her.
Lily reached out and touched the glass frame of the photograph gently.
“I was telling Mommy about our new dollhouse,” Lily whispered softly, looking up at her father with her bright, happy hazel eyes. “I told her that you built it with me.”
Marcus felt a lump form in his throat. He pulled his little girl close, resting his chin on top of her head.
“Mommy knows, sweetie,” Marcus whispered, his voice thick with deep love. “Mommy sees everything. And she is so, so proud of you.”
A gentle knock sounded at the double doors of the living room.
Mrs. Gable stepped inside, wearing a festive red apron, accompanied by the chef, the groundskeeper, and the entire domestic staff. They were all holding small wrapped gifts and wearing wide, joyful smiles.
“Merry Christmas, Mr. Sterling! Merry Christmas, little Lily!” Mrs. Gable cheered warmly.
“Merry Christmas!” Lily giggled, jumping up from the carpet and running over to hug Mrs. Gable around her waist.
The old housekeeper lifted the little girl up into a warm embrace, laughing happily as Lily kissed her cheek.
Marcus stood up, looking at the staff who had become like family over the past months.
“Come in, everyone,” Marcus smiled warmly. “Sit by the fire. We have hot chocolate and presents for everyone.”
For the next three hours, the grand living room was filled with pure, unfiltered joy. Gifts were opened, stories were shared, and the sound of warm laughter echoed up through the vaulted ceilings of the mansion.
There were no fears lingering in the shadows. There were no cruel housekeepers, no locked closets, and no cold marble floors.
There was only a home—restored, protected, and filled with unconditional love.
Later that night, after the staff had retired to their quarters and the house grew quiet, Marcus carried a sleepy, peaceful Lily up the grand staircase to her beautiful, sunlit nursery upstairs.
He gently laid her down on her plush bed, tucking her warm fleece blankets around her shoulders.
Lily rubbed her eyes, letting out a small, contented yawn as she held onto her favorite stuffed bear.
“Daddy?” she whispered softly.
“Yes, baby?” Marcus asked, sitting on the edge of the mattress, gently running his fingers through her soft golden curls.
“Will you be here when I wake up tomorrow morning?”
Marcus leaned down and pressed a long, tender kiss onto her forehead.
“I will be right here, Lily,” Marcus promised softly, his eyes shining in the soft nightlight. “Every morning, every evening, and every single day for the rest of my life. Daddy is never going anywhere.”
Lily smiled, her tiny eyelids growing heavy as she let out a peaceful sigh.
“I love you, Daddy.”
