Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

Gabriel had watched men bleed out on dirty warehouse floors without blinking. He had listened to rival bosses beg for their lives while his enforcers closed in, and he had felt nothing but a cold, clinical satisfaction. He was a creature forged in violence, tempered by grief, and sustained by absolute ruthlessness.

But as he stood in the shadow of his own hallway, listening to a four-year-old girl apologize for her father’s cruel rejection, something shattered deep inside his chest.

Ten years ago, on the night he lost Emma, Gabriel would have surrendered every building, every offshore account, every ounce of lethal power attached to the Romano name just to hold his daughter for five more seconds. He would have walked through fire just to hear her call him 'Daddy' one last time. And here was a man—a biological father—throwing away that priceless gift as if it were worthless trash.

Gabriel’s jaw tightened until his teeth throbbed. His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.

Claire rushed into the room from the kitchen, having heard the tail end of the call. She dropped to her knees beside her daughter, pulling Lily into a fierce, desperate embrace.

"Oh, baby," Claire whispered, her own tears breaking free and spilling down her cheeks. "It’s okay. Mommy will be there tomorrow. We don't need anyone else."

"Is Ryan still refusing to come?" Gabriel’s voice sliced through the emotional storm.

Claire jumped, quickly turning to face her employer. She wiped her eyes furiously with the back of her sleeve, terrified that her personal drama was about to cost her job. "Mr. Romano! I’m so sorry. I didn't know she was using my phone. I’ll leave right now—"

"Answer the question, Claire," Gabriel said softly, stepping out of the darkness. His presence filled the room, cold and overwhelming.

Claire swallowed hard, looking down at her weeping daughter. "Ryan... Ryan left us three years ago. He moved to Brooklyn. He works at a mechanics shop on 4th Street. He hasn't paid child support in over a year, and he only calls when he wants something from me. Tomorrow is Lily’s preschool Family Day. All the other kids have their parents there. Lily just... she just wanted her dad to show up for once."

Gabriel looked down at Lily. The little girl was watching him through tear-stained eyelashes, her tiny shoulders shaking with subdued sobs.

"Where is this shop?" Gabriel asked quietly.

Claire looked confused. "What?"

"The address, Claire. Give me the address of the shop where he works."
