Chapter 7 - The Morning of Family Day

The morning sun broke through the autumn fog, casting a crisp yellow glow over the neat brick courtyard of St. Jude’s Early Learning Center. The parking lot was packed with minivans and sedans. Fathers in polo shirts and business suits were walking hand-in-hand with their children, laughter filling the crisp air.
Inside the classroom, colorful paper butterflies hung from the ceiling, and the walls were adorned with hand-painted family trees.
Claire stood near the craft table, her hands nervously clutching her purse strap. She wore her best church dress—a simple navy blue cotton dress that had seen better days. Next to her, Lily was practically bouncing on the toes of her pink sneakers. She wore a bright yellow dress, her dark curls pinned back with a glittery hair clip.
"Is he coming, Mama?" Lily asked for the hundredth time, her eyes fixed on the classroom door. "He said he was busy, but maybe he found time?"
Claire felt a lump form in her throat. She hated Ryan for making promises he never kept, but more than that, she hated herself for allowing Lily to hope. "Sweetheart, remember what we talked about? Mama is here. We are going to make a great poster together."
"I know," Lily said softly, her excitement faltering slightly as she watched a little boy get lifted onto his father’s shoulders across the room. "I just wished he could see my butterfly."
Suddenly, the noisy chatter of the classroom died down. Several parents turned toward the doorway, their conversations trailing off into confused whispers.
Standing in the frame was a man who looked entirely out of place in a suburban preschool. Ryan Cole was wearing a brand-new grey suit that still had the store tags hastily cut off the sleeve. His hair was slicked back, but his face was deathly pale, and he looked terrified, his eyes darting frantically around the room as if searching for a sniper.
"Daddy!" Lily squealed.
Before Claire could even process what was happening, Lily sprinted across the polished linoleum floor, her yellow dress fluttering, and threw her tiny arms around Ryan’s legs.
Ryan flinched violently, startled by the impact, but then he quickly remembered the terrifying warning he had received twelve hours earlier. He forced a stiff, panicked smile onto his face and dropped to one knee, wrapping his arms around his daughter.
"Hey... hey there, Lily-bug," Ryan stammered, his voice shaking. "I... I made it."

Claire stood frozen near the craft table, her hands covering her mouth in sheer disbelief. Ryan had never shown up to a single event in Lily’s life. He had missed birthdays, holidays, and doctor visits. Yet here he was, dressed in a suit, hugging their daughter as if his life depended on it.
And in a way, it did.
