Chapter 2 - The Serpent's Nest

The study of the Duca estate was a room designed for secrets.

Heavy oak bookshelves lined the walls, filled with first-edition classics and leather-bound ledgers that detailed the financial empire of the family. A massive desk carved from black walnut sat in the center of the room, positioned so that whoever sat behind it could see both the door and the wide, bulletproof glass windows looking out over the private courtyard.

Alessandro sat in his high-backed leather chair, his hands folded under his chin.

Across from him stood Marco, his face grim. On the desk between them lay a paper report from Dr. Bianchi, the family’s private physician.

"Digitalis," Marco said, validating the child's memory. "A highly concentrated liquid extract. It was tasteless, odorless to an adult nose unless you knew exactly what to look for, but highly toxic. If you had drunk that entire cup, boss, your heart would have failed within ten minutes. To an outside medical examiner, it would have looked like a massive myocardial infarction. A natural death."

Alessandro didn't blink. "A clean kill. No blood. No forensics. Just an old man dying of a bad heart, leaving the family leaderless."

"Yes," Marco agreed. "And the poison was not in the coffee beans. It was lined inside the porcelain cup itself. A thin, dried film that dissolved the moment the hot espresso was poured. It means the assassin didn't need to access the kitchen this morning. They only needed access to your private cupboard sometime last night."

Alessandro’s eyes darkened.

His private cupboard was located in the butler’s pantry, a secure area of the house protected by biometric locks. Only five people had the authorization codes to enter that room: himself, Marco, his younger brother Valerio, his consigliere Enzo, and his personal butler of thirty years, Giovanni.

"The circle is small," Alessandro said, his voice flat.

"Too small," Marco replied. "Danny the cook is clean. We verified his background and his movements last night. He was in his quarters by nine PM and didn't leave until five this morning. The security cameras confirm it. The junior maid was also accounted for."

"So the snake lives in the main house," Alessandro murmured. He stood up and walked to the window, looking down at the courtyard where three armed guards patrolled with German Shepherds. "My brother Valerio. Where is he?"

"He’s in the billiard room, sir. He arrived late last night from the docks. He said the shipment from Palermo was delayed by customs, but we verified that the cargo cleared without any issues two days ago."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. Valerio had always been the volatile one, the younger brother who felt overshadowed by Alessandro’s shadow. For years, Valerio had argued for a more aggressive expansion into the narcotics trade—a line Alessandro refused to cross, keeping the family's business focused on shipping, construction, and real estate.

"And Enzo?"

"Enzo is in the dining room, waiting for the morning briefing," Marco said. "He brought the monthly financial reports. He looks... relaxed."

Enzo was more than a consigliere; he had been their father’s closest friend and Alessandro's mentor after the old man passed. If Enzo had betrayed him, then the foundation of the Duca family was truly rotten to the core.

"And Giovanni?"

"Giovanni is in the cellar, selecting the wine for tonight’s dinner with the Moratti family," Marco said. "He has been quiet today. More quiet than usual."

Alessandro turned away from the window. "We proceed as if nothing has happened. We do not let them know we found the poison. If the traitor thinks I am dead, they will make their move to seize control. If they realize the attempt failed, they will go into hiding or try something more desperate."

"The meeting with the Moratti family is at eight tonight," Marco reminded him. "If there is a traitor in this house, they might be working with them. Don Vito Moratti has been eyeing our ports in New Jersey for months."

"Let them think the stage is set," Alessandro said, a cold, predatory smile appearing on his lips. "If they want my crown, they will have to come and take it from my cold fingers. But they will find that my blood runs hotter than they think."

The door to the study opened, and Valerio Duca stepped inside.

He was younger than Alessandro, with the same dark hair and sharp jawline, but his eyes were restless, constantly moving, filled with an impatient energy. He wore an expensive leather jacket and carried a glass of amber liquid.

"Alessandro," Valerio said, tossing himself onto the leather sofa in the corner. "You're up early. I heard there was some drama in the kitchen this morning. Some maid’s kid causing a scene?"

Alessandro watched his brother closely. He noticed the slight tremor in Valerio’s hand as he lifted his glass. It could have been the hangover from his late night, or it could have been something else.

"Just a child being a child," Alessandro said smoothly, sitting back down at his desk. "She knocked over a cup. Nothing to concern yourself with."

Valerio took a sip of his drink, his eyes scanning his brother's face. "Right. Good. We don't need any distractions today. The Moratti meeting is critical. Are we still holding firm on the port limits?"

"Of course," Alessandro said. "The ports belong to the Duca family. They always have."

"Of course," Valerio echoed, but his voice lacked conviction. He stood up, pacing toward the door. "I’m going to get some air. The house feels... tight today."

As Valerio left, Alessandro looked at Marco.

"Put a tail on my brother," Alessandro commanded. "I want to know every call he makes, every person he speaks to. And find out exactly where he was last night between midnight and three AM."

"It's done, boss," Marco said.

The game was in motion. The pieces were on the board, and Alessandro Duca was no longer just a king defending his territory.

He was a hunter, waiting for the wolf to show its teeth.
