Chapter 5 - The Dawn of a New Rule

The morning sun broke through the heavy fog, casting long, clean bars of light across the estate's private courtyard.

Enzo’s body had been removed in the middle of the night, transported to a quiet alleyway in the city where the police would find him later that morning—an old man who had suffered a sudden, tragic heart failure while walking home. No blood. No forensics. A clean exit, just as he had designed for others.

The Moratti family had signed the port agreements under the cold barrels of Alessandro's guard rifles, relinquishing all claims to the New Jersey docks and agreeing to pay a massive tribute to the Duca family for the next ten years to preserve the peace. They had left before dawn, shaken, knowing that the Duca lion was far more dangerous than they had believed.

Alessandro stood on the stone terrace, watching the sunrise. He was wearing a fresh suit, his hands tucked into his pockets, his mind quiet.

He heard soft footsteps behind him.

He turned to see Sophia Alvarez walking toward him, holding Emma’s hand. The little girl was dressed in a clean, pink coat, her curly hair brushed, her gray stuffed rabbit still tucked securely under her arm.

"Mr. Duca," Sophia said, bowing her head respectfully. "We are settled in the south cottage. It is... beautiful, sir. Thank you."

"Is the child warm enough?" Alessandro asked, his eyes falling on Emma.

"Yes, sir. Very warm," Sophia replied, a genuine smile touching her face for the first time.

Alessandro walked over to them. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, silver whistle—a beautiful, antique piece carved with the image of a falcon. He knelt down, eye-level with the little girl once more.

"This is for you, Emma," he said, handing her the whistle. "If you ever smell something funny again, or if you ever feel afraid in this house, you blow this whistle. My men will come to you within ten seconds. No matter where you are. Do you understand?"

Emma took the silver whistle, her eyes shining with delight. She gave it a small, experimental blow, producing a clear, high note that echoed beautifully across the quiet gardens.

"Thank you, sir," Emma whispered, her cheeks flushing pink.

"Go play, piccola," Alessandro said gently.

As Sophia led her daughter toward the green lawns of the garden, where the morning dew was sparkling like diamonds, Alessandro stood up and watched them.

His brother was gone. His mentor was dead. His family was smaller, fractured, and scarred by betrayal.

But as he looked at the little girl running across the grass, her silver whistle catching the golden morning light, Alessandro knew that the Duca house was no longer a place of shadows and secrets.

It was a fortress.

And for the first time in sixteen years, the king could drink his coffee in peace.
