Chapter 3 - THE TRAP IS LAID

By Day 75, the trap was fully set.
Through Marcus Vance’s covert network, we executed a brilliant, multi-layered financial trap that targeted Richard’s weakest trait: his unquenchable corporate vanity.
Apex Capital was preparing for its secondary public offering on the New York Stock Exchange—a deal slated to double Richard’s personal net worth to six billion dollars. To ensure the IPO's success, Richard needed to secure a massive 500-million-dollar liquidity injection from an elite international investment fund.
Enter Vance & Sterling Global Syndicate—a newly registered private equity firm operating out of Zurich, managed behind three layers of offshore proxies by Marcus Vance.
When Richard’s chief financial officer received the proposal from Zurich, offering 500 million dollars in immediate capital at a surprisingly low interest rate, Richard thought God himself was blessing his ascent.
"It’s a guaranteed home run, Sienna!" Richard roared with delight over a dinner of beluga caviar and vintage champagne in the dining room, his loud voice drifting down the corridor into my room. "These Swiss idiots didn't even request a board seat! They just want convertible debt notes backed by my personal equity in Apex!"
"You're a genius, my love," Sienna purred back. "We should buy the estate in Aspen next week!"
What Richard failed to realize—because his corporate lawyers were too lazy to audit the three-hundred-page Swiss credit agreement—was that the "convertible debt notes" contained a cross-default clause linked directly to his marriage status and personal legal standing.
If Richard attempted to execute a transfer of marital assets derived from Victoria Sterling under fraudulent pretenses, or if he was subjected to a criminal indictment involving corporate fraud, the entire 500-million-dollar debt note would instantly mature within twenty-four hours, automatically foreclosing on 100% of his pledged shares in Apex Capital.
Richard was so blinded by his impending triumph that he signed the Swiss credit agreement without hesitation on Day 80.
He had literally pledged his entire company to a firm owned by my father’s trust.
Meanwhile, my physical recovery was complete.
For thirty days, I had been working out silently in my room during the midnight hours, using resistance bands and bodyweight exercises provided by Marcus’s private physical trainer. My muscles had regained their tone, my endurance was fully restored, and my body was stronger than it had been in years.
On Day 85, Dr. Julian Hayes visited the estate under the guise of administering my "final palliative hospice checkup."
Richard allowed the doctor into my room, standing near the doorway with his arms crossed, an insincere expression of sorrow plastered on his face.
"How much time does she have left, Dr. Hayes?" Richard asked, wiping an imaginary tear from his eye. "It’s so painful to watch my sweet Victoria suffer like this. Should we prepare the final arrangements for this weekend?"
Dr. Hayes set his medical bag on the table, checking my pulse while carefully concealing his absolute disgust for the man standing at the door.
"Her vitals are extremely low, Mr. Vance," Dr. Hayes said, reading from a pre-scripted script we had drafted together. "Her organ systems are operating at minimal capacity. I would be very surprised if she survives past Day 90. I suggest you finalize any remaining legal or personal matters immediately."
Richard bowed his head, making a dramatic sighing sound. "Thank you, Doctor. We will make sure her final days are quiet and peaceful."
The moment Dr. Hayes left the house, I heard Richard whip out his cell phone in the hallway.
"Sienna! Call the caterers!" Richard cheered in a harsh, excited whisper. "Order the Dom Pérignon '08 and the kobe beef sliders! The doctor says she won't last past Sunday! Day ninety is the day we celebrate!"

I lay on my bed, staring up at the slate-gray ceiling, my lips curving into a cold, terrifying smile.
"Yes, Richard," I thought to myself, feeling the fierce, surging power of complete health coursing through my veins. "Let’s celebrate Day 90."
