Chapter 5 - THE SURPRISE

The entire grand ballroom fell into an instantaneous, suffocating silence.

Thirty high-society guests, corporate board members, and catering staff froze, turning their heads toward the top of the marble staircase.

Standing at the railing was not the frail, dying, hairless ghost they had heard whispers about for ninety days.

Standing before them was Victoria Sterling—resplendent, radiant, and breathing with vital, terrifying power in an emerald McQueen gown, the fifty-carat Sterling Diamond catching the light of the crystal chandeliers, flanked by Marcus Vance and a team of formidable legal operatives.

Richard’s champagne glass slipped from his hand.

It fell to the marble floor, shattering into a hundred sharp pieces, sparkling wine splashing across his expensive Italian leather shoes. His face turned a ghastly, pale ash-gray, his eyes bulging as if he were staring at a corpse that had clawed its way out of a grave.

Sienna gasped, clutching her pregnant belly, stumbling backward against the mahogany dining table, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

"V-Victoria...?" Richard stammered, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical pitch. "You... you're... how are you walking...?"

I descended the marble staircase slowly, gracefully, my high heels striking each step with absolute precision. Marcus and his team followed three steps behind me.

"You look disappointed, my love," I smiled, my voice smooth, warm, and dripping with lethal irony. "Did you think I was going to miss my own farewell party?"

Richard backed away as I reached the bottom floor, looking wildly around the room as if searching for an escape route. "No... this is impossible! The doctor said... Stage IV pancreatic cancer... Day ninety..."

"Ah, yes," I said, stopping three feet from him, holding up the white leather binder. "The doctor mixed up the charts. It turns out I never had cancer at all, Richard."

A collective gasp echoed through the room among the corporate board members.

"You... you don't have cancer?" Sienna squeaked, her voice trembling with sudden, overwhelming terror.

"Not a single malignant cell," I replied, opening the binder and holding up the high-definition Johns Hopkins MRI scan for the entire room to see. "What I did have in my system was a rather nasty concentration of Synthetic Thallium Chloride. The kind found in heavy-metal rat poison."

Richard’s breath hitched in his throat. His hands began to shake uncontrollably. "Victoria... I don't know what you're talking about—"

"Save it for the grand jury, Richard," I interrupted coldly.

I pulled out the second set of documents—the financial contracts and the Swiss credit default notes.

"While you were busy poisoning my water and planning nursery designs with your mistress," I said, looking over at Sienna, who was now weeping silently in terror, "my legal team was auditing Apex Capital. Do you remember those restructuring papers you brought to my bed every week?"

Richard stared at me, terror paralyzing his limbs.

"You thought you were signing over my trust fund shares," I said, stepping closer to him, leaning in until my voice was a low, terrifying whisper that echoed across the quiet room. "In reality, you executed an automatic corporate forfeiture clause. And that 500-million-dollar credit line you took from Zurich? It was funded by the Sterling Master Trust. When you attempted to transfer my assets under fraudulent medical pretenses, you triggered an immediate total foreclosure."

I threw the thick stack of deeds onto the mahogany dining table right next to the tray of beluga caviar.

"As of 6:00 AM this morning, Richard," I declared loudly, my voice ringing across the entire estate, "I own 100% of Apex Capital. I own this house. I own your vehicles, your offshore accounts, your stock options, and the very suit you are standing in. You are completely, utterly broke."

"You... you can't do this!" Richard screamed, his corporate composure completely shattering into pathetic, desperate rage. "I built Apex! I am the CEO!"

"You were the CEO," I corrected smoothly. "Until thirty seconds ago."

The heavy oak front doors of the estate swung open with a loud bang.

Eight uniformed Federal Agents from the FBI Financial Crimes Division, led by the Assistant United States Attorney, marched into the grand foyer.

"Richard Vance! Sienna Miller!" the lead FBI agent announced loudly, pulling two federal arrest warrants from his coat. "You are under arrest for Conspiracy to Commit Premeditated Murder, Attempted Poisoning, Corporate Wire Fraud, and Securities Manipulation!"

Two agents stepped forward, grabbing Richard’s arms, forcing him around, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists before he could utter another word.

"Victoria! Please!" Richard wailed, tears finally bursting from his eyes as he thrashed against the agents' grip, his dignity completely destroyed in front of his board members and peers. "Victoria, I love you! It was Sienna! She made me do it! She manipulated me!"

Sienna let out a sharp shriek as two female agents stepped up to put handcuffs on her wrists as well. "You lying coward! You told me you wanted her dead!"

"Take them away," I said, turning my back on both of them without a single flicker of emotion.

The guests stood frozen in absolute terror, stepping back as the federal agents dragged Richard and Sienna out of the grand mansion, their pathetic screams fading down the driveway into the siren-filled morning air.

I walked over to the grand dining table, picked up an unopened bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon, and poured myself a single glass of sparkling champagne.

Marcus Vance stepped up beside me, holding a leather pen.

"The board of directors is waiting in the study, Victoria," Marcus said with a warm, triumphant smile. "They are ready to vote you in as the permanent Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Apex-Sterling Global."

I raised my crystal flute, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the bright, beautiful autumn morning—a morning I was supposed to be dead to see.

I took a slow, luxurious sip of the crisp champagne.

"Let's not keep them waiting, Marcus," I smiled, my eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable power. "We have a multi-billion-dollar empire to run."
