Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Guard

The breach was swift, calculated, and silent. A specialized mercenary team, hired by a rival syndicate seeking leverage over Vance Global, had bypassed the outer sensors using signal-jamming equipment. Their goal was simple: take Arthur Vance's son hostage and force Arthur to sign over critical international concessions.

Power to the main house was cut, plunging the grand halls into dim emergency red lighting. Alarms echoed softly through the corridors.

Inside the grand dining room, panic erupted among the wealthy guests. Arthur stood calmly at the head of the long oak table, shielding Leo behind his chair while his personal guards drew their weapons. But two mercenaries in black tactical gear had already breached the double doors, holding silenced automatic rifles.

"Nobody move!" one of the mercenaries barked, his voice amplified by a tactical mask. "Hand over the boy, Vance, and nobody dies tonight!"

Before Arthur's guards could clear their holsters, a silhouette stepped out from the shadows of the upper balcony overlooking the dining room.

It was me.

I dropped a heavy brass candelabra down onto the chandelier chain below, sending the massive glass structure crashing down directly between the mercenaries and the guests. The explosion of glass and steel created instant chaos.

In the fraction of a second of distraction, I vaulting over the balcony railing, dropping gracefully onto the dining room floor. I swept the legs out from under the lead gunman before he could adjust his sightline, disarming him with a swift, precise strike to his wrist that I had practiced ten thousand times with Marcus.

The second mercenary turned his rifle toward me, but Marcus burst through the side doors, neutralizing him instantly with two non-lethal shots.

Within forty-five seconds, the room was secured. The mercenaries were disarmed and pinned to the cold marble floor.

The wealthy guests sat frozen in absolute shock, staring at the fifteen-year-old girl standing in an elegant evening dress, holding a tactical weapon with relaxed, absolute mastery.

Arthur Vance didn't look surprised. He stepped over the shattered glass, carrying Leo, who was completely calm, looking up at me with wide, trusting eyes.

"Predictable timing on their part," Arthur said smoothly, looking at the captured mercenaries as if they were nothing more than an inconvenience.

"They used the catering entrance, just like I thought," I replied, handing the disarmed rifle to Marcus and adjusting my dress.

Arthur looked at me, a profound look of pride in his gray eyes. Five years ago, I was a frightened child in premium economy, fighting for my sister's survival with nothing but €274 and acute perception. Today, I was the head of his personal security protocol—a guardian forged in the fires of adversity.

"You've grown far beyond what I imagined, Clara," Arthur said quietly, placing a hand on my shoulder. "You are no longer just my ward. You are the heart of this family."

I looked over at Maya, who was safely resting in the panic room upstairs under the care of our trusted staff, completely protected from the world's darkness. Then I looked at Arthur and little Leo.

We had run away from home seeking a simple refuge in Rome, but instead, we had found our true destination: a life where we would never be victims again, protected by an unbreakable bond formed thousands of feet in the sky.
