Chapter 7 - The Offer

The car waiting outside was a black, bulletproof Mercedes sedan with tinted windows. The driver opened the door respectfully, and within twenty minutes, we were swept through the grand wrought-iron gates of a private estate located on the outskirts of the city, overlooking the glittering lights of Rome.

The villa was magnificent, filled with marble arches, high ceilings, and classical artwork. A warm fire crackled in a grand stone fireplace in the main living room.

Arthur Vance was sitting in a high-backed leather chair near the fire, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater instead of his sharp suit. On his lap, baby Leo was sleeping peacefully, breathing with steady, rhythmic ease.

A housekeeper immediately led Maya to a nearby dining table stacked with warm soup, freshly baked bread, roasted chicken, and fruit. Maya looked at me for permission, and when I nodded, she dug in with ravenous hunger.

"Sit down, child," Arthur said, pointing to a chair across from him.

I sat on the edge of the leather cushion, keeping my posture straight and defensive. "My real name isn't Elena Vance," I said immediately, wanting to get the truth out on my own terms. "It's Clara. Clara Sterling. And my sister is Maya."

"I know," Arthur said smoothly, taking a sip from a tea cup. "Clara Sterling, age ten. Born in Chicago. Parents disappeared two years ago under suspicious circumstances. You were placed under the custody of your uncle, Richard Sterling—a man with severe gambling debts and an active investigation against him for child neglect."

I felt exposed, as if he had peeled away my skin and read my soul. "Are you going to send us back to him?"

Arthur looked at me, his gray eyes piercing. "Do I look like a man who wastes time returning valuable assets to useless people?"

I blinked, taken aback by his choice of words.

"Your uncle filed a missing persons report six hours ago," Arthur continued, setting his cup down. "Not because he cares about your welfare, but because without you and your sister in his apartment, he loses his state subsidy checks. He is an incompetent coward."

"We aren't going back," I said fiercely, my voice cracking slightly. "I'll run again. I'll take Maya and—"

"You won't have to," Arthur interrupted. "You saved my son today, Clara. What you did on that plane wasn't just luck. It was an extraordinary display of observational intelligence, emotional control, and instinct under immense pressure. Those are traits I value above all else."

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. "I own an international security and private investment firm. I have resources that span the globe. I can make your uncle disappear legally—revoke his guardianship, seal your records, and ensure he never comes within a thousand miles of you again."

May you like

I stared at him, unable to process the magnitude of what he was saying. "In exchange for what?"

"In exchange for your future," Arthur replied calmly. "I will provide you and Maya with a permanent home, top-tier education, security, and full legal protection. In return, when you are old enough, you will train to work for my organization. I need minds like yours, Clara. Sharp, unyielding, and capable of reading human behavior when everyone else sees chaos."
