Part 4: The Secret Noah Was Protecting

Part 4: The Secret Noah Was Protecting

The sound from downstairs echoed through the mansion.

A heavy crash.

Like something had fallen.

Or someone had entered.

Nobody moved.

Not even Evelyn.

And that was the part that scared Elena the most.

Because until now, Evelyn Hawthorne had been untouchable.

Calm.

Controlled.

Always one step ahead.

But now...

She looked afraid.

“Who is downstairs?” Elena whispered.

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on the nursery door.

Sophia slowly moved closer to Noah’s bed.

Protective.

Like a mother who had spent two years waiting for the chance to protect her child again.

Then another sound came.

Footsteps.

Coming up the stairs.

Slow.

Heavy.

Certain.

Elena felt her heart racing.

“Evelyn.”

The voice came from the hallway.

A man’s voice.

Sophia went pale.

“No.”

Elena looked at her.

“Who is that?”

Sophia couldn’t speak.

She looked at Evelyn.

And for the first time, Elena saw something unexpected.

Fear between two powerful women.

“Evelyn,” the man called again.

“I know you’re in there.”

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Someone was trying to open it.

Evelyn quickly stepped forward and locked it.

“Get away from the door.”

Her voice was sharp.

The command was not directed at Elena.

It was directed at everyone.

The door shook.

“Open it.”

The man laughed.

“You always were dramatic.”

Elena stared at Evelyn.

“Who is he?”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“My husband.”

The words hit the room.

Elena blinked.

“Your husband?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Richard Hawthorne.”

The name meant something.

She had seen it in newspapers.

Richard Hawthorne.

Real estate billionaire.

Philanthropist.

One of Connecticut’s most powerful men.

The man who built the Hawthorne empire.

But according to everyone...

He was grieving his dead son.

Elena looked at Evelyn.

“Your husband was downstairs?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Because the truth was obvious.

He was the reason she was afraid.

The door shook again.

Richard’s voice became colder.

“Evelyn.”

A pause.

“Open the door.”

No one moved.

Then he said something that made Elena’s skin crawl.

“You know what happens when people dig into things that are buried.”

Silence.

Then:

“Things come back to the surface.”

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“He knows you’re here.”

Elena swallowed.

“How?”

Evelyn’s expression darkened.

“Because he has been watching this house.”

Sophia whispered:

“He always watches.”

Those words made Elena look at her.

“What does that mean?”

Sophia’s eyes filled with anger.

“He wanted me silent.”

She pointed toward the door.

“He wanted Noah.”

A pause.

“And he wanted Evelyn to take the blame.”

Elena looked between them.

“What are you saying?”

Sophia took a shaky breath.

“Richard killed Daniel.”

The room went silent.

Not suspicion.

Not a possibility.

A direct accusation.

Elena looked at Evelyn.

Expecting denial.

But Evelyn said nothing.

Because she knew.

Two years earlier.

Daniel Hawthorne had discovered something.

That was the beginning.

Elena learned the story piece by piece.

Daniel was not just Evelyn’s son.

He was the heir.

The person who would inherit the entire Hawthorne empire.

But Daniel had started investigating the family business.

Money disappearing.

Illegal deals.

Secret accounts.

Richard knew.

And he was terrified.

Because Daniel planned to expose him.

“He killed my son,” Evelyn said quietly.

The words sounded like they had been trapped inside her for years.

“He arranged the accident.”

Elena felt sick.

“And you knew?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”

A painful silence.

“Because he threatened Noah.”

Elena understood.

A mother’s weakness.

The child.

Richard knew exactly where to hurt her.

“He told me if I spoke, Noah would disappear too.”

Sophia’s face hardened.

“So you locked me away instead?”

Evelyn looked at her.

Regret crossed her face.

“I thought I was protecting him.”

Sophia laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed us.”

Evelyn had no answer.

Because she had.

The door suddenly stopped shaking.

The silence was worse.

Everyone waited.

Then...

Footsteps moved away.

Richard was leaving.

Elena frowned.

“Where is he going?”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Not leaving.”

Her voice was low.

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

Evelyn looked at Noah.

And Elena followed her eyes.

The little boy was awake.

Standing quietly near the bed.

Watching all of them.

“Noah?”

Elena approached him slowly.

The child looked scared.

But not of them.

Of something else.

“Sweetheart?”

His small lips moved.

A whisper.

“Daddy said I have to keep the box safe.”

Everyone froze.

Sophia dropped to her knees.

“Noah…”

The boy looked at her.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy?”

Sophia covered her mouth.

Because it was the first time in two years her son had called her that.

Elena’s heart broke.

But then Noah continued.

“He said if anyone asks…”

He looked toward the hidden room.

“Tell them the truth is inside.”

Elena felt cold.

“What box, Noah?”

The child pointed.

Not toward the closet.

Not toward the door.

Toward the floor beneath the nursery rug.

Everyone stared.

Evelyn whispered:

“No.”

She moved quickly.

She pulled back the rug.

And there it was.

A small wooden panel.

Hidden beneath the floor.

A secret compartment.

Inside was a box.

Old.

Dusty.

Locked.

Sophia looked at it.

“I thought it was gone.”

Evelyn stared.

“Daniel.”

A tear slipped down her face.

“He must have hidden it before he died.”

Elena looked at the box.

“What is inside?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already knew.

The thing Richard feared.

The thing worth killing for.

The truth.

Then...

The nursery window shattered.

Everyone screamed.

A rock hit the floor.

Attached to it was a piece of paper.

Elena picked it up.

Only three words were written.

LEAVE THE BOX.

The room went silent.

Because Richard wasn’t running.

May you like

He was still here.

And he was watching.
