Part 6: The Call Daniel Left Behind

Part 6: The Call Daniel Left Behind
The door opened slowly.
Too slowly.
Almost like Richard Hawthorne wanted everyone inside the room to feel the moment he entered.
He wasn’t rushing.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t afraid.
And that was somehow worse.
A man who had nothing to hide would have been desperate.
But Richard walked into the nursery like he still owned the world.
His expensive coat was perfectly buttoned.
His gray hair was neatly combed.
His expression was calm.
Almost gentle.
The kind of face people trusted.
The kind of face newspapers printed beside words like leader and visionary.
Elena looked at him and understood something.
This was how dangerous people survived.
Not by looking like monsters.
By looking like everyone’s hero.
“Well,” Richard said softly.
His eyes moved around the room.
Evelyn.
Sophia.
Noah.
Then Elena.
“The nanny.”
The way he said the word made Elena’s skin crawl.
Like she was insignificant.
Like she was a piece on a board he was about to remove.
“You caused quite a disturbance.”
Elena held the flash drive tighter.
“You killed your son.”
The room went silent.
Richard didn’t react.
Not immediately.
Then he smiled.
A small, disappointed smile.
“That is a very serious accusation.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You murdered Daniel.”
Richard looked at his wife.
And something cold appeared in his eyes.
“After everything I did for this family…”
His voice lowered.
“You still choose him?”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“I choose the truth.”
Richard laughed quietly.
“The truth?”
He looked around the room.
“You all keep saying that word like it saves people.”
He stepped closer.
“The truth destroys families.”
Elena stared at him.
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
She lifted the flash drive.
“You’re afraid of what’s on this.”
For the first time...
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Elena saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
And she knew she was right.
Richard moved toward her.
“Give that to me.”
“No.”
His smile disappeared.
“You don’t know what you’re holding.”
“I know exactly.”
She looked at Noah.
“A father’s last message to his family.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Daniel was weak.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“Don’t say his name.”
Richard ignored her.
“He was emotional. He didn’t understand business.”
Elena looked at him.
“You mean he didn’t understand how to hurt people.”
A pause.
Richard’s eyes became darker.
“You’re brave.”
He nodded slightly.
“I’ll give you that.”
Then he looked toward Evelyn.
“But bravery is usually what gets people killed.”
The threat was obvious.
And everyone heard it.
Suddenly...
Noah spoke.
Everyone froze.
Because the little boy who barely talked had whispered:
“Grandpa lied.”
Richard turned.
The expression on his face changed completely.
Not anger.
Shock.
Because Noah had spoken.
“Noah?”
Sophia dropped to her knees.
“My baby…”
But Noah wasn’t looking at her.
He was looking at Richard.
His small hands were shaking.
“Daddy said…”
His voice cracked.
“He said you would come back.”
Richard stared.
“What did he tell you?”
Noah looked afraid.
But Elena gently moved beside him.
“It’s okay.”
The boy looked at her.
And somehow...
That gave him courage.
“Daddy said not to trust Grandpa.”
Richard’s face turned pale.
Because a four-year-old child had just repeated a dead man’s warning.
“What else?”
Noah looked at the floor.
Then whispered:
“Daddy said he recorded everything.”
Silence.
Richard’s face changed.
Because that was impossible.
Daniel’s recording.
The box.
The evidence.
Everything.
He thought he had destroyed it.
But Daniel had left one more thing.
Richard suddenly grabbed his phone.
Elena noticed.
“Who are you calling?”
He didn’t answer.
He stepped away.
But before he could dial, Evelyn moved.
“You won’t get away.”
Richard looked at her.
“You still think you have power.”
A bitter smile.
“You lost your son.”
The words hit.
Evelyn froze.
Richard continued:
“You lost this family.”
A pause.
“And soon, you’ll lose everything else.”
Then he pressed the call button.
But before the call connected...
A voice came from the flash drive speaker.
Everyone turned.
Elena hadn’t touched it.
The recording had started automatically.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“Richard.”
The color disappeared from Richard’s face.
Because Daniel was speaking directly to him.
“If you’re hearing this, it means you found the box.”
Nobody moved.
Daniel continued.
“And it means you still haven’t changed.”
Richard stepped back.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“You always believed fear was control.”
Daniel’s voice was calm.
“But fear only works until someone stops being afraid.”
Elena looked at Richard.
The same words.
The same lesson.
Daniel understood it too.
“I know what you did.”
The room became colder.
“I know about the accounts.”
A pause.
“The threats.”
Another pause.
“And I know you were responsible for what happened to me.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
Richard whispered:
“This is fake.”
Nobody believed him.
Not anymore.
Daniel continued:
“I also know you will try to destroy this.”
A pause.
“That’s why I made copies.”
Richard’s face changed.
Copies.
Elena looked at the flash drive.
Then at the documents.
Then she understood.
This was only one piece.
Daniel had prepared everything.
Suddenly, the mansion lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Sophia grabbed Noah.
Evelyn reached for Elena.
Everyone froze.
Then they heard it.
A door opening downstairs.
Not the front door.
Another door.
A hidden entrance.
Richard smiled.
Even in the darkness.
“You should have listened.”
Elena felt cold.
“What did you do?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Then a second voice came through the hallway.
A stranger.
“Mr. Hawthorne?”
Richard relaxed.
“Yes.”
The stranger spoke.
“The police are here.”
Silence.
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“What?”
The voice continued.
“And they have a warrant.”
For the first time...
Richard looked truly afraid.
Elena realized.
Someone else had been moving pieces too.
Someone had already sent the evidence.
Someone knew.
The lights came back.
Richard looked around.
Everyone was staring at him.
Not with fear anymore.
With certainty.
He had spent years controlling everyone through secrets.
But now his own secrets had trapped him.
The mansion doors opened downstairs.
Voices echoed.
Police.
Investigators.
The end had finally arrived.
Richard looked at Elena.
“You.”
His voice was filled with hatred.
“You did this.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at the room.
“At first, I came here to save my family.”
A pause.
“But then I realized something.”
She looked at Noah.
“I wasn’t the only one who needed saving.”
Richard stared at her.
And for the first time...
He understood.
The nanny he underestimated was the person who destroyed his entire empire.
As Richard was taken away, Evelyn stood silently.
Watching the man she had protected for years disappear.
Sophia held Noah.
And Noah held Elena’s hand.
A tiny gesture.
But it meant everything.
Because the child who was once afraid to speak...
Had finally found his voice.
But as the police searched the mansion...
One investigator walked toward Elena.
“Ms. Reyes?”
“Yes?”
He looked serious.
“There’s something else you need to see.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
The investigator held up an old envelope.
“Your name was written on it.”
Her heart stopped.
“My name?”
He nodded.
“It was found hidden with Daniel’s files.”
Elena opened the envelope.
Inside was one sentence.
May you like
Written in Daniel’s handwriting.
Elena, if you are reading this, the danger is not over.
