Chapter 9 - The Declaration

Three weeks later.

The autumn sun was bright over the Westchester estate. The blood had been scrubbed from the stone floors, the broken glass replaced, and the security systems upgraded to military-grade defense protocols.

Emma sat in a luxurious velvet armchair in the sunlit conservatory, her right arm resting in an elegant dark silk sling.

She was wearing a long, flowing burgundy dress that hugged her rich curves, her dark chestnut hair styled in soft waves over her shoulders. Beside her, Sophie was happily coloring a drawing of three figures holding hands under a bright yellow sun.

The heavy oak doors opened.

Julian stepped into the room.

He looked magnificent. He wore a crisp, tailored black suit with a dark red tie that matched Emma’s dress. But he wasn't carrying his usual leather briefcase or encrypted satellite phone.

He carried a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

Behind him walked Dominic, holding a legal folder, and three high-ranking lieutenants of the Vance Syndicate—men who governed the harbor docks, the real estate trusts, and the financial networks of the East Coast.

Emma looked up, her eyebrow arching slightly. "Is this a board meeting?"

Julian walked over, stopping right in front of her chair. He didn't look at his lieutenants. He looked only at the plus-size baker sitting before him.

"This is a coronation," Julian said quietly.

He motioned to Dominic, who stepped forward and opened the legal folder on the glass table.

"As of nine o'clock this morning," Julian announced, his voice echoing clearly across the conservatory, "fifty percent of the Vance Corporation, the real estate holding trusts, and the Westchester estate have been legally transferred into the name of Emma Brooks."

Emma gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "Julian, no! That’s crazy! I can't accept that!"

"You didn't ask for it," Julian replied smoothly. "Which is precisely why it belongs to you."

He dropped to one knee before her chair—a gesture that made his armed lieutenants gasp in absolute disbelief. The ruthless sovereign of New York’s underground, a man who bowed to no king, president, or rival, was kneeling on the marble floor before a woman covered in bandages.

Julian popped open the velvet box.

Inside rested a magnificent, flawless ten-carat black diamond ring, framed by delicate silver vines that mirrored the rose patterns of the conservatory glass.

"Every man in my organization, every rival in this city, and every high-society parasite in Manhattan looked at you and saw a baker woman," Julian said, his voice dropping into a deep, intense baritone that vibrated with absolute, unbreakable devotion. "They saw your weight, your simple clothes, and your flour dust, and they thought you were weak."

Julian reached out, taking her left hand in his.

"They did not see the dragon that guards my child," Julian continued, his gray eyes burning into hers. "They did not see the woman who stood before bullets, who speaks the silent language of my daughter’s soul, and who brought life back into a dead man’s chest."

Sophie jumped off her chair, her small hands flicking frantically with pure, unadulterated joy.

Say yes, Emma! Say yes!

Julian looked at Emma’s radiant, tear-stained face.

"I will never marry a socialite, Emma," Julian declared softly, slipping the black diamond ring onto her finger. "I will never call another human being my queen. Will you marry me, Emma Brooks? Will you rule this house, this family, and my heart for the rest of our lives?"

Emma looked at the massive ring, then at the little deaf girl bouncing on her toes, and finally into the eyes of the man who had traded his cold solitude for her warm, unyielding love.

"Yes," Emma wept, throwing her good left arm around his neck, pulling his face down to hers. "Yes, Julian! Yes!"

Julian wrapped his massive arms around her waist, lifting her from the chair, kissing her with a fierce, possessive passion that sealed their fates forever.
