Chapter 10 - The Quiet Kingdom

Six months later.
The Cathedral of St. Patrick in Midtown Manhattan was surrounded by two hundred armed security guards, blacked-out SUVs, and high-society paparazzi lined up along Fifth Avenue.
Inside, the cathedral was bathed in the warm, ethereal light of a thousand burning candles.
Standing at the altar in a custom black tuxedo was Julian Vance. His scar was visible, his posture broad and lethal, but his eyes were fixed entirely on the heavy oak doors at the back of the church.
Beside him stood six-year-old Sophie, wearing a magnificent white lace dress with a flower crown of red roses tucked into her hair.
The grand organ swelled into a triumphant, deafening chord.
The heavy doors swung open.
Walking down the long marble aisle, escorted by no one because she belonged entirely to herself, was Emma Brooks.
She was a vision of breathtaking, unapologetic beauty. Her wedding dress was a custom ivory satin gown designed to accentuate every rich, gorgeous curve of her frame—a sweeping sweetheart neckline, off-the-shoulder lace sleeves that elegantly hid her bullet scar, and a magnificent twelve-foot train that rustled against the stone floor. She looked like an ancient goddess of earth and fire, radiant, proud, and unstoppable.
As she reached the altar, Julian stepped forward, taking her hand.
He didn't wait for the priest to speak.
Julian turned toward his daughter, raising his hands in the quiet air of the massive cathedral.
Before the senators, the mafia bosses, the billionaires, and the media elite watching from the pews, the most feared man in New York signed his vows in clear, flawless American Sign Language.
I take this woman, Julian signed, his face filled with absolute, reverent love. To protect her. To honor her. To serve her. She is our sun. She is our home.
Sophie wept tears of pure happiness, her tiny hands signing back from the side of the altar. Our queen.
Emma smiled through her tears, raising her own hand to complete the triad.
I take this man, Emma signed, looking into Julian’s gray eyes. And this little sparrow. Forever.
The priest cleared his throat, smiling softly. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Julian didn't hesitate. He wrapped his arm around Emma’s waist, pulling her broad, gorgeous body flush against his chest, dipping her low over the altar steps as he kissed her with a deep, breathless devotion that brought the entire cathedral to its feet in a thunderous ovation.
That night, back at the Westchester estate, the cold stone walls were lit with warm gold lanterns.
In the glass conservatory, where the scent of freshly baked vanilla tart mixed with the cool night air of the Hudson River, three people sat together on a wide velvet sofa.
Sophie was sound asleep in the middle, her small head resting against Emma’s lap, holding a half-eaten chocolate chip cookie in her hand.
Julian sat beside Emma, his broad arm wrapped tightly around her shoulders, pulling her against his side. His long fingers were intertwined with hers, the ten-carat black diamond catching the starlight from above.
"What are you thinking about, my wife?" Julian whispered into her dark curls.
Emma looked down at the sleeping child, then up at the dark, handsome face of her husband.
"I was thinking about one thirty-seven in the morning," Emma said softly, a radiant smile breaking across her lips. "About a cold bakery, a mug of melted mud, and a little girl who refused to let the world silence her hands."
Julian leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her lips.

"She didn't just speak her language, Emma," Julian murmured against her skin. "She brought me my wife."
Outside, the quiet river rolled peacefully under the starry sky, guarding the warm fortress where silence was no longer a burden, but the sweetest song ever sung.
