Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Life

One year later.

The annual Moretti family autumn gathering was held at the estate’s grand gardens. In the past, this event had been a tense, quiet affair held strictly for business purposes. But today, the wide green lawns were filled with music, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of grilled food.

Captains, union leaders, and estate staff mingled together under white tents. Kids were running across the grass, playing games, while their parents sat at long tables drinking wine and enjoying the sunshine.

Dominic stood on the raised stone terrace overlooking the garden, a glass of red wine in his hand. Clara’s memory was still with him, but it no longer brought pain. Instead, it was a warm, quiet light that guided his steps. He had honored her memory not by drowning in grief, but by choosing to live again.

Behind him, soft footsteps approached.

Dominic turned to see Teresa walking out onto the terrace. She wore a beautiful floral sundress, her hair falling softly over her shoulders. Over the past year, as Estate Manager, she had become his closest confidante, his partner in turning the estate into a real home, and something much deeper that both of them were quietly, beautifully beginning to explore.

“The caterers just brought out the dessert,” Teresa smiled, leaning against the stone railing beside him. “Mia has already managed to steal two chocolate cupcakes.”

Dominic laughed, looking out toward the lawn. Down near the fountain, four-year-old Mia was running around in a pink dress, chasing a butterfly while holding Barnaby the rabbit tightly in her hand. Frankie was walking behind her at a respectful distance, playing the role of her personal, giant bodyguard with absolute pride.

“She’s fast,” Dominic noted, his eyes shining with affection.

“She gets that from her mother,” Teresa teased softly, looking at him. “Thank you, Dominic. For everything you’ve given us.”

Dominic set his wine glass down on the stone railing. He turned to face Teresa, reaching out to gently take her hand in his. His fingers were still large and calloused, but his touch was filled with absolute tenderness.

“You have it backwards, Teresa,” Dominic said softly, his voice rich with emotion. “You and Mia gave me my life back. I was walking through the dark for three years, thinking I was already dead. Your daughter brought me back into the light.”

Teresa smiled, tears of happiness sparkling in her eyes as she squeezed his hand.

Down on the lawn, Mia stopped chasing the butterfly. She turned around, looked up at the terrace, and saw Dominic and her mother standing together in the warm sunlight.

Mia raised her arm, waving her one-eared rabbit wildly in the air.

“Mr. Boss!” Mia shouted at the top of her lungs, her sweet voice carrying across the sunny garden. “Look! I’m not running! I’m dancing!”

Dominic looked down at the little girl who had saved his soul. He raised his hand, waving back to her with a bright, radiant smile that warmed his entire face.

“Keep dancing, Mia!” Dominic called back softly.

He pulled Teresa closer to his side, wrapping his arm around her waist as they watched the sun shine over their home. The long, dark night was finally over. The master of the house was no longer walking in the shadows—he was standing firmly in the light, surrounded by the family he was born to protect.
