Chapter 9 - The Blue Room Filled with Light

Three weeks later, the Moretti mansion underwent a complete transformation.

The east wing was no longer a forbidden sanctuary of grief. Under Dominic's orders, interior decorators had come in to update the blue nursery. The room was repainted a bright, cheerful sunflower yellow, filled with white bookshelves, soft rugs, and colorful toys.

It was no longer a room for a memory; it was a playroom for Mia.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Dominic sat on the soft wool rug inside the newly renovated playroom. The formidable mafia boss, who managed a multi-million-dollar empire and commanded hundreds of men, had his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and was currently taking instructions from a four-year-old architect.

“No, Mr. Boss,” Mia scolded gently, placing a blue wooden block on top of his green one. “The blue one goes on top so the roof doesn't fall down!”

“Ah, my mistake,” Dominic said with mock gravity, adjusting the block carefully. “Architectural integrity is key.”

In the doorway, Frankie stood holding a leather document folder, watching the scene with an amused smile. He tapped lightly on the doorframe.

“Boss,” Frankie called out softy.

Dominic looked up. “What is it, Frankie?”

“The final paperwork for the Valenti asset transfer just came through from our attorneys,” Frankie reported, stepping into the room. “The ports in Jersey are officially under Moretti control. Their remaining captains have sworn allegiance to the family. Everything is settled.”

Dominic nodded, satisfied. “Good. Make sure the union workers get their promised wage increases starting next month. We run those docks cleanly.”

“Understood,” Frankie said. He looked down at the tower of wooden blocks Dominic and Mia had built together. “You know, three months ago, if someone told me I’d see the head of the Moretti family building block castles on a Tuesday afternoon, I would have had them thrown in the river.”

Dominic smiled—a genuine, relaxed smile that reached his eyes. “Life surprises you, Frankie.”

Mia looked up from her toys, eyeing the formidable underboss. “Do you want to build a castle too, Mister Hammer?”

Frankie blinked, taken aback. “Me? Oh, no, kiddo, I’m... I’m not really a castle guy—”

“Sit down,” Dominic commanded with a quiet smirk, gesturing to the floor beside him. “That’s an order from the boss.”

Frankie looked at Dominic, then down at Mia’s wide, hopeful brown eyes. The terrifying lieutenant sighed, chuckled, and unbuttoned his suit jacket, sitting down cross-legged on the rug right next to Dominic.

“Alright,” Frankie grunted, picking up a yellow block. “Where does this one go?”

“On top!” Mia declared happily, clapping her hands.

Teresa walked past the open doorway carrying a basket of folded laundry. She paused, watching the two most powerful men in the city’s underground sitting on a play mat with her daughter, laughing as a tower of wooden blocks tumbled over.

She smiled warmly, a deep sense of peace settling over her heart. The dark shadow that had hung over this mansion for three years was completely gone. In its place was something strong, protective, and full of love.
