Part 2: The Night Javier Came Home Early

The buzzer rang again.

Then again.

Then again.

Lucía immediately buried her face against my shoulder.

“Don’t answer,” she whispered.

My heart hammered.

Javier called a second time.

Then a third.

Finally a text appeared.

OPEN THE DOOR.

Something felt horribly wrong.

I answered the phone.

“Why aren’t you opening the door?” Javier asked.

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“You’re supposed to be in Madrid.”

A pause.

“My meeting ended early.”

Then another pause.

“Did Lucía tell you something?”

The question hit like a gunshot.

I looked down at the trembling little girl in my arms.

“What do you mean?”

Silence.

Then:

“Nothing.”

The buzzer sounded again.

Longer this time.

Aggressive.

Another text arrived.

OPEN THE DOOR NOW.

Then another.

DON'T MAKE THIS DIFFICULT.

Lucía started crying.

“Mommy...”

I carried her toward the bedroom.

Suddenly I heard metal scraping.

Keys.

Javier was trying to unlock the apartment.

The handle rattled violently.

“MARIA!”

His voice echoed through the hallway.

“OPEN THE DOOR!”

The deadbolt held.

Another violent shake.

Then a loud bang.

He kicked the door.

Lucía screamed.

I wrapped both arms around her.

Another bang.

Then—

Sirens.

The noise stopped instantly.

Blue lights flashed through the window.

Police cars.

Several of them.

Voices shouted downstairs.

Commands.

Movement.

Then silence.

A firm knock followed.

“POLICE!”

Relief nearly knocked me to my knees.

When I opened the door, officers entered quickly.

One female officer immediately sat beside Lucía.

Another questioned me.

A detective arrived minutes later.

Then came the discovery.

Inside Javier’s travel bag they found a small white bottle.

No label.

No prescription.

Just white powder.

The detective held up the evidence bag.

“Do you recognize this?”

“No.”

He nodded grimly.

“We’ll have it tested immediately.”

Then another officer entered carrying a file.

The detective read it.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” I asked.

He looked directly at me.

“Your husband was investigated three years ago.”

My stomach tightened.

“For what?”

The detective hesitated.

“His former partner reported concerns involving her daughter.”

The room went silent.

Lucía looked up.

I felt ice spread through my chest.

“What kind of concerns?”

The detective answered quietly.

May you like

“Possible drugging.”

Everything inside me stopped.
