Part 3: The Truth Hidden in the Milk

The buzzer kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each sharp sound seemed to echo through the apartment.

Lucía buried her face deeper into my shoulder.

Her tiny body shook.

I tightened my arms around her.

“It’s okay,” I whispered.

But nothing felt okay.

Not anymore.

Outside, someone pounded on the building entrance.

My phone lit up again.

Javier.

Calling.

Again.

And again.

The police had told me not to open the door.

Not for anyone.

Not even my husband.

Especially not my husband.

Then another sound came.

A knock.

Not downstairs.

At my apartment door.

My blood turned to ice.

That was impossible.

The building entrance required a key.

How had he gotten inside?

Lucía whimpered.

“He knows,” she whispered.

The knocking became harder.

“Open the door!”

Javier's voice.

Loud.

Angry.

Nothing like the calm man everyone thought they knew.

“Isabel!”

I froze.

“I know you're in there!”

Another bang rattled the frame.

“Open this door right now!”

Lucía began crying.

“Mommy, please don't let him in.”

I grabbed my phone.

The dispatcher was still on the line.

“He's here,” I whispered.

“What?”

“My husband. He's at the door.”

The dispatcher's voice sharpened instantly.

“Officers are less than two minutes away. Stay where you are. Do not approach the door.”

Another crash.

The handle twisted violently.

“ISABEL!”

The sound terrified me more than the words.

Because Javier wasn't asking.

He was trying to get inside.

Then something happened.

The doorbell camera notification appeared on my phone.

Motion detected.

Hands shaking, I opened the live feed.

Javier stood outside.

Sweating.

Breathing hard.

His eyes darting up and down the hallway.

Like a man terrified of being caught.

Then he pulled something from his jacket.

A key.

My stomach dropped.

The spare apartment key.

The one I thought was still hidden in the garage.

The lock began turning.

Lucía screamed.

At that exact moment, distant sirens filled the night.

Javier froze.

His head snapped toward the stairwell.

The sirens grew louder.

Closer.

Then red and blue lights flashed through the hallway window.

For one second, I watched panic explode across my husband's face.

Real panic.

Not annoyance.

Not frustration.

Fear.

He stepped back from the door.

Then turned and ran.

The police reached the building less than thirty seconds later.

By the time officers entered the apartment, Javier was gone.

But he had left something behind.

Evidence.

Lots of it.

The next morning felt unreal.

Lucía and I sat inside a child advocacy center while detectives interviewed us separately.

A social worker stayed with her.

A female detective stayed with me.

Everyone spoke softly.

No one rushed her.

No one doubted her.

For the first time, Lucía looked like a child instead of a frightened witness.

Then Detective Ruiz entered the room carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a white plastic bottle.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you find that?”

“In your kitchen.”

I stared at it.

The bottle looked familiar.

Very familiar.

Then I remembered.

The vitamin powder Javier added to my smoothies every morning.

The supplement he insisted would help with stress.

The one he never let me buy myself.

Ruiz nodded.

“We had it tested.”

I already knew.

Before she spoke.

I knew.

“It wasn't vitamins,” she said quietly.

The room seemed to tilt.

“What was it?”

“A powerful sedative.”

My chest tightened.

“How long?”

Ruiz hesitated.

“We don't know yet.”

“How long?”

Her eyes softened.

“Possibly months.”

I couldn't breathe.

Months.

Every morning.

Every smoothie.

Every drink.

Every unexplained headache.

Every afternoon when I struggled to stay awake.

Every memory that felt cloudy.

Every moment I blamed myself for being exhausted.

It hadn't been stress.

It had been him.

The detective slid another folder across the table.

“There's more.”

I opened it.

Bank statements.

Insurance policies.

Legal documents.

Then I saw my name.

Life Insurance Beneficiary: Javier Morales.

Amount: €1,500,000.

I stared.

“What is this?”

“Your husband increased the policy six months ago.”

The room fell silent.

Then Ruiz said the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Three weeks after increasing the policy, he began purchasing sedatives under a false name.”

I looked toward the window.

Toward the gray Valencia sky.

Toward the world I thought I understood.

And suddenly nothing made sense anymore.

Not the marriage.

Not the kindness.

Not the years together.

Nothing.

That evening, another discovery shattered what remained.

Detectives finally located Lucía's biological mother.

A woman named Elena Vargas.

For years, Javier had told everyone the same story.

That Elena abandoned her daughter.

That she was unstable.

Dangerous.

Unfit.

The court records told a different story.

Elena hadn't abandoned Lucía.

She had disappeared.

Three years earlier.

Without warning.

Without explanation.

Without a trace.

My stomach twisted.

“Missing?” I asked.

Detective Ruiz nodded.

“She vanished six months after filing for full custody.”

The room became very quiet.

“Do you think Javier hurt her?”

Ruiz didn't answer immediately.

But her silence told me enough.

That night I couldn't sleep.

Lucía finally drifted off beside me in the temporary safe-house apartment provided by authorities.

I sat awake watching her breathe.

Thinking about the milk.

The sedatives.

The insurance policy.

The missing mother.

And one terrible question.

If Lucía hadn't spoken that night...

How much longer would I have lived?

The answer frightened me more than anything else.

Because somewhere in Valencia, Javier knew the police were coming.

And desperate men don't run forever.

They make mistakes.

The detectives believed they were close.

Very close.

May you like

They just didn't know that Javier was already preparing his next move.

And before the week ended, he would make a decision so reckless that it would finally expose everything.
