PART 3 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The storm outside grew louder.
Rain slammed against the tall windows of the Sterling mansion, and the entire room seemed frozen in time.
Lily remained on the floor, one hand pressed against her burning cheek.
She wasn’t afraid of Victoria anymore.
She was afraid of Arthur.
Because the way he looked at her wasn’t the look of a stranger.
It was the look of someone who had known the truth all along.
“Mr. Sterling…” Lily whispered.
Her voice cracked.
“If you know who I am… then why didn’t you say anything?”
Arthur didn’t answer immediately.
His eyes moved to the silver half-pendant hanging around her neck.
The pendant she had carried for twenty years.
The only thing left from her father.
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Lily saw it.
Pain.
A deep, hidden pain.
“You found that,” Arthur said quietly.
Lily touched the pendant.
“My father gave me the other half when I was eight.”
The room went silent.
Victoria looked confused.
She looked between them.
“What are you talking about?”
Arthur ignored her.
His eyes stayed on Lily.
“Where did you get it?”
“My mother kept it after he disappeared.”
Arthur slowly walked toward the desk.
His footsteps were calm.
Controlled.
But his hands were shaking.
For the first time since Lily met him, the billionaire looked vulnerable.
Human.
“I thought it was gone forever,” he murmured.
Lily’s heart pounded.
“Mr. Sterling…”
Arthur closed his eyes briefly.
Then he said the words she had waited twenty years to hear.
“My name wasn’t always Arthur Sterling.”
A tear slipped down Lily’s face.
“I know.”
Arthur looked at her.
“My name was Daniel Carter.”
The world stopped.
Lily couldn’t breathe.
Every sound disappeared.
Every thought vanished.
There was only one sentence.
Her father was alive.
“Dad…”
The word came out before she could stop it.
Arthur froze.
Nobody had called him that in decades.
His face changed.
The cold billionaire mask cracked.
For a second, Lily saw the man from her childhood.
The man who sang badly while cooking.
The man who carried her when she fell asleep in the car.
The man who promised he would never leave.
Then Arthur stepped back.
“No.”
The word was painful.
“No, you can’t call me that.”
Lily stared at him.
“Why?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because Daniel Carter died twenty years ago.”
Victoria looked completely lost.
“What is happening?”
Arthur finally turned toward his wife.
“You wanted the truth?”
Victoria stepped back.
“Yes.”
“Then hear it.”
He picked up the envelope.
“I knew Lily was my daughter the moment she entered this house.”
Lily’s breath caught.
“Then why hire me?”
“Because I needed to know if you came for money.”
The words hurt.
Even though she understood.
“I don’t care about your money.”
“I know that now.”
Arthur looked away.
“When I saw you looking at me, I thought you were another person trying to take advantage of my past.”
Lily wiped her tears.
“I spent my whole life looking for you.”
Arthur’s face tightened.
“And I spent my whole life running.”
The mansion fell quiet.
Then Arthur opened the envelope.
Inside were old documents.
A newspaper clipping.
And a photograph.
He placed the photograph on the desk.
Lily picked it up.
It was her father.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside her mother.
Holding little Lily in his arms.
Her hands trembled.
“Where did you get this?”
Arthur looked at the photo.
“Before the storm, I was working for a company owned by people who wanted control of my research.”
Lily frowned.
“What research?”
Arthur hesitated.
Then said:
“Technology that could have changed the energy industry.”
She listened.
“Those men wanted it. I refused.”
“So they tried to destroy you?”
Arthur nodded.
“The storm wasn’t an accident.”
Lily’s blood ran cold.
“What?”
“They sabotaged my car.”
The room became colder.
“I crashed during the storm. I survived, but I was found with severe injuries. When I woke up, I had no memory.”
Lily covered her mouth.
“I was told my family was gone.”
Arthur swallowed.
“They gave me a new identity. A new life.”
“And you believed them?”
“For years.”
He looked at her.
“Until I saw you.”
Victoria suddenly laughed.
A small, nervous sound.
Nobody looked at her.
“You expect me to believe this?”
Arthur turned.
His expression hardened.
“You knew.”
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“Knew what?”
“That my past was fake.”
The silence answered.
Lily looked at her.
“What is he talking about?”
Arthur’s voice became colder.
“Victoria didn’t marry me because she loved me.”
Victoria’s face changed.
“Arthur—”
“You found me twenty years ago.”
Lily’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Victoria looked trapped.
Arthur continued.
“You knew Daniel Carter survived.”
The room filled with tension.
“You erased my old identity and helped create Arthur Sterling.”
Lily stared at Victoria in horror.
“Why?”
Victoria’s face twisted.
“Because Daniel Carter was nobody.”
Her voice became bitter.
“But Arthur Sterling was powerful.”
Lily couldn’t believe it.
“You stole my father’s life.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“I built that life.”
Arthur looked at her with disgust.
“No.”
“You controlled it.”
Suddenly, Arthur’s phone rang.
He looked down.
His security chief’s name appeared.
He answered.
“What is it?”
The voice on the other side was urgent.
Arthur’s face changed.
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“Do not let anyone leave the house.”
Lily felt a chill.
“What happened?”
Arthur slowly lowered the phone.
Then he looked toward the windows.
“The people who tried to erase my past…”
A beat.
“They know Lily found me.”
Thunder exploded above the mansion.
And outside the gates…
May you like
The security cameras went dark.
Someone was coming.
