Chapter 2 - The Audit of Betrayal

Morning broke over Manhattan in shades of icy blue and pale slate.

Inside the master suite of the Harrington estate, the heat had mysteriously cut off at 4:00 a.m.

Graham woke up shivering beneath his duvet, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. He rolled out of bed, cursing under his breath as he kicked a stray whiskey bottle across the hardwood floor.

“Mother!” he yelled down the hallway, pulling on a thick cashmere sweater. “Did you touch the thermostat? It’s freezing in here!”

Vivian pulled her bedroom door open, wrapped in a fur coat, her face white with frustration. “The radiators are completely cold, Graham! And the hot water isn't working! I called the utility company, but the automated system said our account has been restricted!”

“It’s just a glitch,” Graham growled, brushing his dark hair back with his hands. “Evelyn must have canceled her little credit card before she left. She’s trying to play petty games.”

He reached for his phone on the nightstand to check his bank balance, but a bright red alert banner was flashing across the screen:

[NOTICE: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY ORDER OF VALE CAPITAL RISK MANAGEMENT.]

Graham frowned, tapping the screen aggressively. “What the hell is this?”

He pulled out his secondary card—the black corporate card issued by Harrington Luxe—and dialed his personal banker at First National.

The banker answered on the second ring, his voice unusually stiff. “Mr. Harrington.”

“David! What’s going on with my private accounts?” Graham demanded, pacing across the chilly Persian rug. “There’s some ridiculous error on my app saying my funds are restricted.”

“It’s not an error, Graham,” the banker replied coldly. “Vale International Holdings exercised their senior lien clause at midnight. All personal and corporate credit facilities associated with your name have been placed under administrative quarantine pending an internal forensic review.”

Graham felt a sudden, unpleasant knot tighten in his stomach. “Lien clause? David, I’m the Senior Director of Procurement at Harrington Luxe! Vale is just a holding partner!”

“Vale owns ninety-two percent of Harrington Luxe’s voting shares, Graham,” the banker said flatly. “I suggest you speak with your legal counsel immediately. Good day.”

The line went dead.

Vivian stepped into his room, her eyes wide with mounting panic. “Graham... what did he say?”

“Nothing!” Graham snapped, though his hands were beginning to sweat despite the freezing room. “It’s just bureaucratic nonsense! Evelyn probably used some fake documents to freeze my card because she’s bitter about the divorce! I’m going into the office right now to clear this up with corporate.”

He grabbed his coat and his briefcase, ignoring his mother’s frantic questions, and rushed down to the garage. He tapped his key fob to start his seventy-thousand-dollar sports car.

Nothing happened.

The digital dashboard flickered once, displaying a sharp white text message across the central console:

[VEHICLE LEASE TERMINATED BY VALE FLEET SERVICES. ENGINE IMMOBILIZED.]

“Dammit!” Graham slammed his fist against the steering wheel.

He was forced to walk three blocks through the freezing slush to flag down a street cab, paying the driver with the last fifty-dollar bill he had hidden in his coat pocket.

By 9:00 a.m., Graham walked into the towering glass skyscraper of Harrington Luxe on Fifth Avenue.

Usually, the receptionist greeted him with a warm smile and an iced espresso. Today, she didn't even look up from her desk. Two uniformed security guards stood near the turnstiles, their arms crossed over their chests.

Graham swiped his executive badge against the electronic barrier.

A harsh red light flashed, and a loud alarm beeped twice.

[ACCESS DENIED.]

“What is the meaning of this?!” Graham shouted, turning to the security guards. “I’m Graham Harrington! I run Procurement on the twentieth floor!”

The lead guard stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “Mr. Harrington, your security clearance was revoked at 6:00 a.m. You are required to escort yourself directly to Conference Room A on the executive floor.”

“Revoked? By whose authority?!”

“By the Chief Executive Officer,” the guard replied smoothly.

Graham gritted his teeth, his pride wounded in front of a dozen staring employees in the lobby. “Fine! I’ll talk to the CEO myself! I’ve been asking for an audience with the board for six months anyway!”

He was escorted into the executive elevator by both guards. When the doors opened on the top floor, the usual bustling atmosphere of corporate designers and assistant managers was gone. The floor was completely silent.

In the center of Conference Room A—behind a thirty-foot glass table—sat four men in dark suits, their lapels pinned with the silver crest of Vale International Holdings. At the center of the table was Marcus Vance, reviewing a thick binder of financial statements.

Graham stormed into the room, tossing his leather briefcase onto the mahogany table.

“Vance!” Graham yelled, pointing a finger at the lawyer. “I knew you were behind this! You harassment tactics won't work! My family founded Harrington Luxe! You can't lock me out of my own company!”

Marcus didn't look up from his binder. He simply flipped a page.

“Your grandfather founded Harrington Luxe, Mr. Harrington,” Marcus said calmly. “Your father ran it into thirty million dollars of debt. And you have spent the last three years embezzling four point two million dollars from the procurement department to fund your personal lifestyle.”

Graham’s breath caught in his throat. The anger on his face turned into a sudden, blinding flash of terror. “What... what are you talking about?! That’s a lie!”

Marcus opened a second folder and slid a sheet of paper across the polished glass.

“Offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under the name 'G. Harrington Enterprises',” Marcus read smoothly. “Invoices forged for raw silk deliveries that were never ordered. Payments routed through shell companies to fund your mother’s diamond jewelry, your sports cars, and your mistress, Miss Chloe Dupont.”

Graham fell back a step, his knees turning to jelly. “How... how did you get those records?”

“I got them because my boss asked for them,” a calm voice spoke from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling window.

The tall leather executive chair at the end of the table slowly rotated around.

Sitting in the chair was a woman wearing a tailored ivory silk suit, her dark hair swept up in an elegant, commanding bun. Diamonds gleamed at her ears, and around her wrists rested two simple gold bracelets.

She leaned forward, resting her chin on her linked fingers, her dark eyes pinning Graham to the floor like a specimen on a board.

Graham’s heart stopped beating.

“Evelyn?” he whispered, his voice barely a squeak.

May you like

I smiled—a slow, cold, devastating smile that didn't reach my eyes.

“Good morning, Graham,” I said softly. “Welcome to Vale International.”
