Chapter 3 - The Eviction and the Courtroom Trap

Graham stood frozen in the center of the executive conference room, his eyes wide, his mouth hung open in absolute, unadulterated disbelief.

He looked at my tailored ivory suit. He looked at the four senior executives sitting beside me, their heads bowed in respect. He looked at Marcus Vance, who was currently organizing the forensic audit files beneath my name seal.

“No...” Graham stumbled backward, his hand catching the edge of a chair to keep from falling. “No, this is a joke. This is some kind of sick performance. You’re... you’re an assistant designer! You repair hems in the basement!”

“I built this empire while you were spending your afternoon naps in hotel rooms with Chloe Dupont, Graham,” I said, my voice smooth and rhythmic, carrying the authority of an absolute monarch. “When I met you three years ago, I wanted to know if a man could love me for who I was, not for my fortune. I kept my identity private. I quiet-funded your family's failing reputation. I paid off your father’s debts through Vale capital.”

I leaned back in the executive chair, looking down at him.

“And in return, you pushed me into the snow ten days after I delivered your children.”

“Evelyn... sweetie...” Graham’s voice cracked, a desperate, sweaty smile breaking across his pale face as he took a tentative step toward the table. “You... you didn't tell me! If I had known—!”

“If you had known I was worth eight billion dollars, you would have treated me like a queen,” I interrupted coldly. “Which proves you never loved me at all. You loved money. And now, Graham, you have neither.”

Marcus Vance tapped his pen against the table once.

“As of 9:15 a.m.,” Marcus announced, “the board of directors of Vale International has voted unanimously to terminate your employment at Harrington Luxe with cause. Furthermore, criminal referral papers regarding your four point two million dollars in corporate fraud have been submitted to the District Attorney’s office.”

“Criminal referral?!” Graham shrieked, his voice turning shrill with panic. “You’re putting me in prison?! Evelyn, we are married! You can't testify against your husband!”

“We won't need her testimony,” Marcus replied with a thin smile. “Your signature is on twenty-four separate fraudulent wire transfers. The paper trail is flawless.”

Two uniformed police officers stepped into the conference room from the side door, holding a set of steel handcuffs.

Graham panicked. He scrambled backward, pulling his phone from his pocket with slick, trembling fingers. “I’m calling my mother! I’m calling our family lawyers!”

“I wouldn't bother,” I said softly, standing up from my chair and smoothing down the lapels of my jacket. “Marcus, show him the live feed from the estate.”

Marcus pressed a button on his remote. The seventy-inch digital display on the conference room wall flickered to life, displaying a live security feed from the front gates of the Harrington mansion.

Outside in the freezing snow, three heavy tow trucks were currently hauling away Vivian’s luxury sedans.

Four Vale enforcement officers were carrying armfuls of designer clothing, fur coats, and antique furniture out the front doors, stacking them neatly on the wet asphalt outside the gate.

Vivian Harrington was standing on the icy curb in her silk robe and fur coat, screaming hysterically at the officers while two movers padlocked the heavy wrought-iron gates from the inside.

“What are they doing?!” Graham screamed, clutching his hair. “They’re throwing my mother out!”

“Correction,” I said, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window that looked out over the Manhattan skyline. “They are removing a trespasser from my property. Just as she ordered me removed last night.”

“Evelyn! Please!” Graham dropped to his knees right there on the conference room carpet, tears finally bursting from his eyes as the officers stepped behind him, grabbing his wrists. “I was wrong! My mother made me do it! She hated you! I always loved you, Evelyn! Please, think of our boys! Think of Julian and Adrian!”

I stopped near the door, turning my head slightly to look at him over my shoulder.

“My sons will never hear your name, Graham,” I said, my voice cold and final. “They will grow up as Vales. And when they ask me where their father is... I will tell them he died the night he threw them into the cold.”

The handcuffs clicked loudly around Graham’s wrists.

“Take him away,” Marcus ordered.

As the officers dragged a sobbing, screaming Graham out of the executive wing, Marcus stepped beside me, holding out a dark leather pen.

“The emergency injunction papers for sole custody and asset forfeiture are ready for your signature, Ms. Vale,” Marcus said gently. “The hearing is scheduled for two o'clock this afternoon.”

I took the pen, signing my name across the heavy parchment with steady, unwavering precision.

“Let’s finish this,” I said.
