PART 1

At exactly 11:18 a.m., Carol Bennett stopped at the top of the staircase.
Her hands were still covered in flour.
Her hair was tied back.
Her expensive dress from the wedding celebration the night before was wrinkled from hours of cleaning.
She looked down the hallway with growing frustration.

The house was finally quiet.
The guests had left.
The dishes were washed.
The flowers were arranged.
Everything was perfect.
Everything except one thing.
Her son's new wife was still in bed.
"Sophie!"
Carol’s voice echoed through the large house.
No answer.
She frowned.
She waited.
Nothing.
Her irritation grew.
Since six in the morning, she had been awake.
She had prepared breakfast for relatives.
She had answered phone calls.
She had cleaned the living room where everyone had celebrated Daniel and Sophie’s wedding.
And where was Sophie?
Sleeping.
Like nothing mattered.
Like she didn’t care that she had entered the Bennett family.
Carol walked toward the bedroom.
Every step became heavier.
In her mind, she already knew the explanation.
The girl was spoiled.
That was what she had thought from the beginning.
A beautiful girl.
A sweet smile.
But not strong enough.
Not responsible enough.
Daniel had always been too soft-hearted.
He saw kindness where Carol saw weakness.
And now, after only one night of marriage, Sophie was already showing her true colors.
Carol knocked once.
"Sophie?"
Silence.
Her jaw tightened.
She opened the door.
The room was dark.
The curtains were closed.
The air felt strange.
Too still.
Too heavy.
"Sophie, get out of bed."
Nothing.
Carol stepped inside.
She could barely see the shape of someone under the blankets.
"Sophie."
Her voice became sharper.
"You cannot spend half the day sleeping. This is not how a wife behaves."
Still nothing.
Something uncomfortable moved through Carol’s chest.
A strange feeling.
A warning.
But she pushed it away.
She walked toward the window.
"Enough."
She grabbed the curtains.
And pulled them open.
Sunlight flooded the room.
For one second, Carol felt satisfied.
Finally.
The girl would wake up.
Finally, she would learn.
But then…
Carol saw the sheets.
And everything inside her stopped.
The white blanket was covered in dark red stains.
Not a little.
A lot.
Blood.
Fresh and dried together.
Carol froze.
Her fingers slowly released the curtain.
"Sophie?"
Her voice changed.
No anger.
Only fear.
She rushed to the bed.
"Sophie!"
She grabbed her shoulder gently.
The young woman didn't move.
Her face was pale.
Almost gray.
Her lips were slightly open.
Her breathing was so weak that Carol had to look carefully to make sure she was alive.
For the first time since meeting Sophie, Carol felt panic.
Not disappointment.
Not judgment.
Panic.
"Oh my God..."
She touched Sophie’s forehead.
Cold.
Too cold.
"Sophie, wake up."
No response.
Carol’s hands began shaking.
She looked around desperately.
Then she noticed something on the nightstand.
A hospital wristband.
And a folded paper.
With trembling fingers, Carol picked it up.
At first, she didn’t understand what she was reading.
Then her eyes landed on one sentence.
PATIENT DIAGNOSED WITH LIFE-THREATENING ANEMIA.
Her breath stopped.
She continued reading.
PATIENT REQUIRES IMMEDIATE MEDICAL FOLLOW-UP AND ABSOLUTE REST.
Carol felt the paper slipping from her hands.
Rest?
Sophie wasn’t lazy.
She wasn’t avoiding the family.
She was sick.
Very sick.
A memory suddenly hit Carol.
The wedding.
The night before.
Sophie standing in her wedding dress.
Smiling.
But looking exhausted.
Carol had mistaken it for nervousness.
She remembered Sophie saying:
"I’m sorry if I seem tired."
And Carol had answered:
"A marriage requires effort, Sophie. You can’t hide behind excuses."
The words suddenly felt cruel.
Carol looked back at the young woman lying in the bed.
A woman who had barely entered this family.
A woman who had been trying to smile through pain.
A woman who had hidden how much she was suffering.
And Carol realized something terrifying.
Nobody knew.
Not Daniel.
Not the family.
Not even her.
"Sophie..."
Her voice cracked.
She touched her hand.
It was cold.
Too cold.
Carol immediately grabbed her phone.
"DANIEL!"
Her voice shook so badly that she barely recognized herself.
The call connected.
"Mom? What's wrong?"
"Get the car."
A pause.
"Mom?"
"NOW!"
Daniel heard the fear in her voice.
"What happened?"
Carol looked at Sophie.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Your wife..."
She swallowed.
"She’s not okay."
Daniel arrived minutes later.
He ran upstairs.
The moment he saw the bed, he stopped.
His face turned white.
"Sophie?"
He rushed forward.
"What happened?"
Carol stood frozen near the door.
"I thought..."
Her voice broke.
"I thought she was being lazy."
Daniel looked at her.
But he didn't blame her.
Not now.
Because the only thing that mattered was the woman lying in front of them.
As Daniel lifted Sophie carefully, something fell from beneath the mattress.
A small sealed envelope.
Carol noticed it.
She picked it up.
There was no name.
Only three words written on the front.
For Daniel.
Her heart tightened.
"Sophie wrote this."
Daniel looked over.
"What is it?"
Carol stared at the envelope.
"I don't know."
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
And the first sentence made her blood run cold.
Daniel, if you are reading this, it means I couldn't hide the truth anymore.
Carol and Daniel looked at each other.
Because suddenly they understood.
Sophie had not just hidden an illness.
She had hidden something much bigger.
May you like
Something she was afraid her husband would never forgive.
And the truth inside that envelope was about to change the entire Bennett family forever.
