PART 4

The name on the medical file stared back at Daniel.
Michael Hart.
Sophie’s biological father.
The man who abandoned her.
The man who might now be the only person who could save her life.
For several minutes, Daniel said nothing.
He just watched Sophie sitting silently on the hospital bed.
Her hands were folded tightly together.
Her eyes were fixed on the floor.
She looked terrified.
Not because of the surgery.
Not because of the illness.
Because of him.
Her father.
"Sophie," Daniel said gently.
She didn't look up.
"I know what you're thinking."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Then you know why I don't want to find him."
Daniel sat beside her.
"Tell me."
A long silence followed.
Then Sophie finally spoke.
"When I was twelve, my mother got worse."
Her fingers tightened around the blanket.
"She was always tired. Always in pain. But she still tried to make everything normal."
Daniel listened quietly.
"My father hated hospitals. He hated seeing her sick."
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
"He used to say the disease had taken over our house."
She swallowed.
"One night, after my mother collapsed, he packed his bags."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"He told her he couldn't spend his life taking care of someone who was broken."
A tear slipped down Sophie's cheek.
"Then he looked at me and said..."
She stopped.
Daniel waited.
"What did he say?"
Sophie closed her eyes.
"He said, 'I hope you don't become like her.'"
The room went silent.
Daniel had heard many cruel things in his life.
But that sentence...
From a father to a child...
It was something else.
It wasn't just abandonment.
It was a wound that never stopped bleeding.
"He left that night," Sophie continued.
"My mother died two years later."
Daniel took her hand.
"And you never saw him again?"
She shook her head.
"No."
For a moment, Daniel thought about the irony.
The man who refused to stay when Sophie needed him...
Might now be the reason she survived.
But there was another question.
"How did the doctors find him?"
Sophie looked away.
"I never changed my records."
She whispered:
"I always knew someday they might need family medical history."
Daniel understood.
Even after everything...
She had left the door open.
Not for forgiveness.
For survival.
That afternoon, Daniel and Carol met with the hospital team.
The doctor explained everything.
"Mr. Hart has been contacted. He agreed to testing."
Sophie sat quietly.
"And?"
The doctor looked at her.
"He is a match."
Nobody spoke.
The words were supposed to bring relief.
Instead, they brought pain.
Later that evening, Daniel found Sophie sitting alone near the hospital window.
The city outside was covered in rain.
Just like the day they first met.
"You should be resting."
She smiled weakly.
"You're starting to sound like a doctor."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
A small smile appeared on her face.
The first real one in days.
Then it disappeared.
"I'm scared."
Daniel sat beside her.
"Of the surgery?"
She shook her head.
"No."
She looked at him.
"Of seeing him."
Daniel didn't interrupt.
"What if he looks at me and sees the same thing?"
"What thing?"
Her voice cracked.
"That I'm damaged."
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"No."
"You don't know that."
"I do."
He turned toward her.
"Because I've spent years watching people pretend they are strong."
A pause.
"But you are the strongest person I've ever met."
The next morning, Michael Hart arrived.
Sophie knew before she saw him.
She felt it.
Some wounds recognize the person who created them.
The hospital room door opened.
And a man in his late fifties stepped inside.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face Sophie barely remembered.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Michael whispered:
"Sophie."
Her expression didn't change.
"Mr. Hart."
The name hurt him.
She saw it.
But she didn't care.
Not yet.
Michael looked older than she remembered.
Not powerful.
Not cruel.
Just old.
"I didn't know you were sick."
Sophie gave a small laugh.
A painful one.
"You didn't know anything about me."
He lowered his eyes.
"You're right."
Daniel watched silently.
Because this wasn't his conversation.
This was a daughter and father who had lost years.
"I came as soon as they called."
Michael’s voice shook.
"I wanted to see you."
Sophie stared at him.
"Why?"
The question was simple.
But it carried years of pain.
Michael had no answer.
At least not one that could fix anything.
"I was afraid."
Sophie looked confused.
"Afraid?"
He nodded.
"Your mother’s illness scared me."
His eyes filled.
"I was young. I was selfish."
A pause.
"And I convinced myself leaving was easier than watching someone I loved suffer."
Sophie looked away.
"You left anyway."
"I know."
The room stayed quiet.
Then Michael said something unexpected.
"I heard about your wedding."
Sophie froze.
"You did?"
He nodded.
"I saw pictures online."
His voice broke.
"I saw you smiling."
A tear moved down his face.
"And I realized I missed your whole life."
Sophie didn't cry.
Not yet.
She was too tired for anger.
Too tired for forgiveness.
She only said:
"Your cells might save me."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
"But that doesn't erase what you did."
"I know."
For the first time, Michael didn't defend himself.
Didn't explain.
Didn't ask to be forgiven.
He simply accepted the pain.
And somehow...
That made Sophie more emotional than any apology could.
The surgery was scheduled for the next morning.
That night, Daniel stayed beside Sophie.
Neither of them slept.
Finally, Sophie whispered:
"If I don't wake up..."
Daniel immediately stopped her.
"No."
"Daniel..."
"No."
His voice broke.
"I spent years thinking I knew what mattered."
He held her hand.
"Money. Success. Reputation."
He looked at her.
"But then I met you."
Tears filled his eyes.
"And you taught me what really matters."
Sophie cried quietly.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"I know."
"I never wanted to be a burden."
Daniel kissed her hand.
"You never were."
The next morning, the surgery began.
Daniel waited.
Carol waited.
Michael waited.
Three people who had all failed Sophie in different ways...
Now praying for the same thing.
Her life.
Hours passed.
Then a doctor finally walked through the doors.
Everyone stood.
The doctor smiled.
"The surgery was successful."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Relief overwhelmed him.
But the doctor continued.
"However..."
Everyone froze.
"There is something you should know."
The doctor looked at Daniel.
"During the procedure, we discovered another issue."
Daniel’s face changed.
"What issue?"
The doctor sighed.
"The disease may have been accelerated by something else."
A pause.
"Something Sophie was exposed to."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The doctor looked at the report.
"Her condition may not have been entirely genetic."
Silence.
"What are you saying?"
The doctor lowered his voice.
"Someone may have known she was getting worse."
Daniel felt cold.
Because suddenly, the illness that almost killed Sophie...
Might not have been only fate.
Someone may have been hiding another truth.
May you like
And the question was:
Who?
