Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Country Club

Two weeks later, the annual gala for the New York Real Estate Association was held at the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel—a glittering affair of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and wealthy elites discussing multi-million-dollar developments.
Daniel Sullivan stood near the bar, nursing a scotch, his face pale and drawn. Since Maro Group had pulled out of the Brooklyn terminal project, two other major investors had quietly backed out of his upcoming ventures. His father was furious, the board was threatening a vote of no confidence, and his life was rapidly unravelling.
Suddenly, the ambient chatter in the ballroom died down.
A heavy, suffocating silence swept across the room as the double doors at the entrance swung open.
Nicholas Maro walked in.
He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, flanked by Vance and another security associate. But it wasn't Nicholas that made the room stop breathing.
It was the woman walking beside him.
Ava Sullivan wore a stunning emerald-green silk evening gown that swept the floor with quiet elegance. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate updo, diamond teardrop earrings caught the light of the chandeliers, and her posture was straight, confident, and radiant.
The whispers began instantly.
Isn't that Daniel’s wife? Wasn't she just a kindergarten teacher? What is she doing on Nicholas Maro’s arm?
Daniel slammed his glass down onto the bar, his face flushing dark red with humiliation and rage. He pushed his way through the crowd, stepping directly into their path.
"Ava!" Daniel snapped, his voice shaking. "What the hell do you think you're doing? You’re still my legally married wife! Get away from him!"
Nicholas didn't even break his stride. He simply raised one hand, signaling Vance to step forward.
Vance stepped between Daniel and Ava, his massive frame blocking Daniel’s path with effortless intimidation.
"Mr. Sullivan," Nicholas said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "I believe my attorneys already served you with the restraining order. Coming within five hundred yards of Miss Sullivan is a violation of federal court mandates."
"She’s my wife!" Daniel shouted, losing all composure as heads turned from across the room. "She belongs to me!"
Ava stepped out from behind Nicholas’s shoulder, looking at her estranged husband with a calm, pitying clarity that stung him worse than any insult.
"I belong to no one, Daniel," Ava said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the grand ballroom. "And by the time your father’s accountants finish sorting through the fraudulent invoices you filed with Maro Terminals, you won't even belong to Sullivan Development."
Daniel lunged forward, blind with rage, but Vance caught him by the lapels of his tuxedo and lifted him an inch off the floor with one hand, setting him firmly back down against a marble pillar.
Nicholas didn't look back as he offered his arm to Ava.
"Shall we go, Miss Sullivan?" Nicholas asked quietly.
May you like
"Let's," Ava replied, resting her hand lightly on his arm.
As they walked past the stunned crowd toward the VIP terrace, Daniel slid down against the marble pillar, realizing with absolute, crushing certainty that he had lost everything—not because he had a daughter, but because he had been too blind to realize what a real queen looked like.
