Chapter 9 - The Verdict

Three months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the courtyard of the Upper East Side estate, warming the stone paths and turning the young rose bushes a vibrant green.
Inside the west garden suite, Lily was learning to laugh, her bright, bubbling giggles echoing off the high ceilings as Mrs. Gable bounced her gently on her knee.
Downstairs in the private study, Ava sat at the oak desk, reviewing the final settlement papers delivered by the federal bankruptcy court.
Sullivan Development had officially restructured under court supervision. Daniel Sullivan had been stripped of his executive title, forced out of the board by his own father, and faced a federal investigation into corporate fraud and tax evasion. The divorce had been finalized with absolute custody granted to Ava, alongside a multi-million-dollar settlement drawn directly from Daniel's personal holdings.
The heavy oak door of the study opened, and Nicholas walked in, loosening his silk tie as he tossed his suit jacket over the back of the sofa.
"It's over," Ava said softly, looking up from the papers with a smile that reached her eyes.
Nicholas walked over to the desk, glancing down at the settlement decree before looking back at her. "I told you it would be."
"You risked a great deal of capital and influence for me and Lily," Ava said, her voice dropping into a tender, reflective tone. "Why, Nicholas? A man in your position doesn't usually go to war over a stranger."
Nicholas leaned against the edge of the desk, his dark river-water eyes softening just a fraction as he looked down at her.
"You weren't a stranger from the moment I saw you standing in that snowstorm," Nicholas said quietly. "You had every reason to break, and you chose to fight instead."
He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
Ava didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned slightly into his touch, feeling the steady, grounding strength of the man who had pulled her out of the dark.
"Does this mean I'm still your head archivist?" she asked, a playful spark in her eyes.
Nicholas smiled—a genuine, rare smile that made him look entirely human.
"Only if you agree to a promotion," he murmured.
May you like
"What kind of promotion?"
"Permanent resident," Nicholas said, leaning down to press a soft, deliberate kiss to her lips. "And my wife, if you'll have me."
