By the second month, Caleb had successfully launched the "Hart Initiative." It wasn't just housing; it was a comprehensive support system—childcare, legal aid, and financial planning for low-income service workers.
Olivia was his right hand. She wasn't just a beneficiary; she was the architect. She knew where the cracks in the system were because she had fallen through them. She was sharp, organized, and fiercely protective of the other families they brought on.
But the transition was difficult. One afternoon, Olivia walked into Caleb’s office, looking distressed.
"There’s a family, the Mendez family," she said, clutching a file. "They were denied by our partners. They said the credit check didn't pass."
Caleb frowned. "That’s the protocol. We have to ensure stability."
Olivia slammed the file onto his desk. "Stability is a privilege of the rich, Caleb! You can't ask a family that has been living in their car for six months to have a perfect credit score. That is the definition of a Catch-22."
Caleb looked at her, the flash of fire in her eyes reminding him of the woman on the bench, but this time, it wasn't fear—it was rage. And it was justified.
"You’re right," he said quietly. "I’m sorry. I’m still thinking like a banker, not like a human."
He took the file. "We bypass the credit check. We provide a guarantor. Whatever it takes."
As he worked on the paperwork, he realized that he was learning more from Olivia than she was from him. He was learning how to be brave. He was learning how to stand up for something other than his own net worth.
