Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The board of directors finally moved against him. They filed a motion to remove him as CEO, citing "mismanagement of funds" and "dereliction of fiduciary duty."
Caleb didn't fight it with lawyers. He fought it with data.
He called an emergency meeting. He didn't bring PowerPoint presentations filled with projections and margins. He brought the families.
He brought Olivia. He brought the Mendez family. He brought ten other families whose lives had been fundamentally altered by the Hart Initiative.
They stood in the lobby of his corporate headquarters, a diverse, resilient group of people who had been invisible until Caleb gave them a voice.
"You want to remove me for mismanagement?" Caleb asked the board members, who were gathered in the main conference room, looking deeply uncomfortable. "Look at these people. Before we started this, they were your janitors, your security guards, your catering staff. You profited from their labor, and you ignored their existence. I didn't mismanage our funds; I reallocated them to keep our human capital alive."
The board chairman, a man whose skin was as cold as his spreadsheets, sneered. "This is a business, Caleb, not a soup kitchen."
"And that is why this business is dying," Caleb retorted. "It’s dying of irrelevance. People don't want to work for machines anymore. They want to work for something that matters. I have doubled our employee retention rates since the Initiative started. I have cut recruitment costs by forty percent. Your fiscal responsibility is a relic. My humanity is the future."
He didn't wait for a vote. He stepped down, handing over his resignation letter. "I’m taking my shares with me. And I’m taking the Initiative. You can have your profit margins, but you’ll have to find someone else to clean your floors."
He walked out of the building with Olivia by his side.

"You just walked away from everything," she said, her voice filled with awe.
"No," Caleb smiled, looking at the city skyline, which suddenly looked less like a grid and more like a collection of stories. "I just walked toward everything that actually matters."
