Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING SECRETS

By the third week of October, the early morning sessions had become a sacred ritual. Ava was no longer just sitting on the mat; under Mason's guidance, she was performing grueling core-stabilization exercises that pushed her physical endurance to its absolute limits. Her speech remained sparse—fragments of sentences, quiet words spoken only to Mason or Sienna—but the heavy, suffocating aura of despair around her had vanished.

However, as Ava began to heal, the mysterious circumstances surrounding Mason Ryder began to unravel.

It started with an unannounced visitor at Ashford Capital's corporate headquarters in downtown Portland. Sienna was reviewing quarterly logistics reports when her executive assistant announced that a representative from the Department of Defense was waiting in the lobby.

Sienna instructed her security team to bring the man up immediately. Major Richard Vance walked into her office carrying a leather briefcase. He was a stern man with graying temples and an immaculate dress uniform.

"Mrs. Ashford," Vance began, declining her offer to sit. "I'm here regarding one of your recent financial transactions. Three days ago, your foundation attempted to wire a substantial sum of money into a restricted trust account linked to former Staff Sergeant Mason Ryder."

Sienna narrowed her eyes. "I offered Mr. Ryder a compensation package for his consultation work with my daughter. He refused it, so I attempted to deposit it into an educational fund for his family. Is there a crime in being generous, Major?"

"When it involves Mason Ryder, it creates a paper trail that alerts people who shouldn't be looking," Vance replied coldly. "Mrs. Ashford, do you know why a man with a Silver Star and fourteen years of elite combat experience is sweeping floors at a pediatric rehabilitation clinic for minimum wage?"

"Because he wants peace," Sienna said firmly.

"Because he is under federal protection," Vance corrected, dropping a thick document onto her mahogany desk. "The extraction mission in Afghanistan that injured Ryder was not a standard medical evacuation. His team was sent to retrieve classified intelligence from a fallen stealth drone. Ryder was the only survivor who saw who ambushed them. The private military contractors responsible for that ambush were never fully prosecuted due to jurisdictional loopholes."

Sienna felt the room grow cold. "Are you telling me he is in danger?"

"I'm telling you that Mason Ryder has spent three years keeping a low profile to protect himself and the people around him," Vance said sternly. "Your high-profile presence, your private investigator's inquiries, and your large financial transfers are drawing eyes back onto him. If you care about your daughter's progress—and Mr. Ryder's life—you will cease all financial inquiries immediately."

Sienna stared at the officer, her mind churning with realization. Mason hadn't just retreated into silence out of grief; he was living in the crosshairs of dangerous men. He had chosen the quiet, invisible role of a maintenance worker not only to hide his physical pain, but to blend into the background of a chaotic world.

That evening, as rain slammed against the glass of the rehabilitation center, Sienna waited for Mason in the courtyard after his shift. He emerged from the staff doors, wearing an old canvas jacket, his collar turned up against the wind.

"Major Vance came to my office today," Sienna said without preamble as she stepped into his path.

Mason stopped, his eyes darkening instantly. He didn't ask questions. He simply closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting out a heavy, tired sigh that seemed to drain the remaining color from his face.

"I told you not to dig, Sienna," he said, his voice flat.

"I wasn't trying to expose you," Sienna pleaded, stepping closer despite the rain. "I wanted to help you! You're saving my daughter's life, Mason. I can protect you. I have resources, security teams, legal power—"

"You have money," Mason interrupted sharply, stepping into her space, his dark eyes fierce with cold reality. "Money doesn't stop a bullet, Sienna. It doesn't stop men who operate in the dark. I came here to be invisible. If my presence puts Ava in danger, I leave tonight."

May you like

"No!" Sienna gasped, grabbing his arm. "Please, no. She needs you. We need you."

Mason looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then at her tear-streaked face. For the first time, the icy distance in his posture softened just a fraction. "Then stop looking into my past," he whispered. "Let me be the guy who fixes the chairs."
