Chapter 7 - AN UNEXPECTED THREAT

The breakthrough at the parallel bars marked a turning point in Ava's physical recovery, but peace was short-lived.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Sienna was in a virtual board meeting in the hospital lounge, two men in dark suits stepped out of the elevator on the third floor. They didn't look like medical staff or visiting family members. They walked with the broad, stiff posture of private security personnel, their eyes scanning every door and hallway with cold calculation.

Mason was at the end of the hall, replacing a ballast in a flickering fluorescent light fixture, when he caught their reflection in the window glass.

His military instincts, honed by years of surviving ambushes, screamed an immediate warning. He quietly stepped down from his ladder, wiped his hands on his rag, and stood near the doorway of Ava's therapy room.

The taller of the two men stopped near the nurse's station, pulling a photograph from his jacket pocket. "We're looking for Mason Ryder," the man said to a young receptionist. "We have legal documents to serve regarding a corporate liability suit."

Sienna, hearing the disturbance, walked out of the lounge. The moment her eyes landed on the two men, she recognized the crest embroidered on their dark lapels: Vanguard Defense Solutions—the private security contractor named in Major Vance's classified report.

"Can I help you?" Sienna asked, her corporate voice sharp and commanding as she stepped between the men and the therapy room.

"Mrs. Ashford," the taller man said, offering a tight, emotionless smile. "We're just here to deliver a subpoena to your maintenance supervisor. Nothing to be alarmed about."

"You need to leave this facility immediately," Sienna said, pulling her phone from her pocket. "This is a private pediatric clinic. You are trespassing."

"We just want a quick word with Ryder," the second man said, stepping around Sienna toward the therapy room.

Before the man could take two steps, Mason appeared in the doorway. He didn't look angry; his expression was completely void of emotion—the terrifying, absolute calm of a trained operative preparing for violence.

"Out," Mason said, his voice dropping into a low, guttural register that made even the medical staff freeze.

"Ryder," the tall man sneered, reaching toward his inner coat pocket. "You've been real hard to find—"

In a movement so fast it was almost impossible to follow, Mason bridged the distance between them. He grabbed the man's wrist, twisting it upward with brutal efficiency, forcing him to drop a small recording device onto the linoleum floor. Mason placed his broad palm against the second man's sternum, driving him backward five feet into the elevator doors with enough force to rattle the steel frame.

"If you ever come near this building again," Mason whispered into the taller man's ear, his voice deadly quiet, "I won't just serve you documents. I will finish what we started in the valley."

The man's face turned pale. He recognized the look in Mason's eyes—the look of a PJ who had survived the worst hell on earth and had nothing left to lose.

"Let's go," the man barked to his partner, rubbing his twisted wrist as the elevator doors opened behind them. They stepped inside, their eyes locked on Mason until the doors slid shut.

The hallway fell into a stunned silence. Nurses stood frozen behind their counters. Sienna stood shaking, her phone still in her hand.

Ava, sitting in her wheelchair near the gym door, watched the entire confrontation without flinching. She didn't look scared. She looked at Mason with absolute confidence, knowing that her protector was indestructible.

Mason turned to Sienna, his chest heaving slightly, the veins in his forearms bulging against his skin. "They found me," he said quietly. "It's over, Sienna. I have to leave."
