Chapter 4 - The Anonymous Ally

The car roared down the suburban streets, turning corners at dangerous speeds to break line of sight. Inside, the heavy breathing of three terrified people filled the cabin.
Ethan was crouched low on the floorboards, holding his head, while I pressed my back against the leather seat, staring wide-eyed at the woman driving us away from the nightmare.
She was in her late thirties, with sharp, angular features, dark hair pulled back into a tight tactical bun, and intense grey eyes that flicked constantly between the rearview mirror and the road ahead. She wore an unmarked black jacket and had a radio earpiece fitted snugly into her left ear.
"Who are you?" I demanded, my hands searching the seats for anything I could use as a weapon if this proved to be another trap. "Why were you watching my house? How did you get my number?"
The woman reached down and hit a toggle switch on her dashboard. A digital scanner hummed to life, broadcasting live police radio chatter: All units, we have reports of shots fired on Elmwood Court. Suspect is a white male, armed and dangerous...
"My name is Agent Evelyn Reed," she said, her voice crisp and entirely devoid of panic. "Department of Financial Crimes, Federal Bureau of Investigation."
I blinked, stunned. "The... the FBI? What does the FBI have to do with my husband trying to murder us?"
Evelyn glanced at me through the rearview mirror. "Your husband isn't just a suburban accountant, Mrs. Miller. For the past eighteen months, Jake has been under federal investigation for orchestrating a massive, multi-million-dollar money laundering scheme involving foreign tech cartels. We were twenty-four hours away from issuing an indictment."
"Money laundering?" Ethan rasped from the floor, slowly sitting up. "Dad works for a local firm!"
"That firm is a front," Evelyn replied, turning onto the interstate highway heading toward downtown Columbus. "Three days ago, Jake realized the wire was closing in on him. He knew his assets were about to be frozen. But he had a backup plan: a ten-million-dollar key-man life insurance policy he quietly took out on both of you six months ago, combined with a clean identity waiting for him in Switzerland."
The horror of her words washed over me like ice water.
Ten million dollars. He hadn't just decided to discard us because our marriage was falling apart. He had treated us like liquid assets—a final payout to fund his escape from federal prison.
"You knew," I whispered, anger suddenly boiling over the terror. "You were watching the house! You knew he was going to do this!"
"We didn't know he was going to move tonight!" Evelyn countered sharply, her eyes flashing with genuine remorse. "We had eyes on his vehicle, but we didn't have authorization for wiretaps inside your living room. When he bought that unregistered prepaid phone yesterday, I bought a cloned signal sweep. An hour ago, I intercepted an encrypted call he made to an offshore contact confirming 'the liabilities were taken care of.' That’s when I drove to your house."
"He poisoned us," I said, reaching into my cardigan pocket and pulling out the ziplock bag containing the vial. "He put this in our food."
Evelyn’s eyes widened as she glanced at the clear bag. "Is that..."
"I got it out of the trash, just like your text said," I stated, clutching the bag tightly. "We need a hospital. My son and I... we can feel it. Our organs..."
"I'm not taking you to a public hospital," Evelyn said firmly, adjusting her earpiece. "Jake has contacts in the local emergency services, and the moment your names pop up on an ER intake log, he'll know where you are. I'm taking you to a secure federal medical facility in Dublin. We have toxicologists on standby."
May you like
She looked at Ethan, then back at me.
"Hold on back there," she warned. "Jake isn't going to let ten million dollars walk away without a fight."
