Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

"You won't destroy it," Jake said, his voice dropping into a desperate bluff. "That drive contains evidence the FBI needs to bring down the entire cartel network. You need it as much as I do."
"I don't need it that badly," Evelyn replied without a single second of hesitation.
She pressed the red button on the remote.
Inside the nearby metal safe, a bright, blinding flash of white thermal light erupted, accompanied by a sharp, sizzling sound. The smell of burning silicon and melted metal filled the room instantly.
The hardware token—and the forty million dollars encrypted inside it—was reduced to a puddle of molten slag.
"NO!" Jake screamed, a primal, frantic sound that tore from his throat.
His complete loss of control was his final error.
As he raised his pistol toward Evelyn in a blind rage, I stepped forward with everything I had left. I swung the heavy steel IV pole like a baseball bat, striking Jake across the side of his knee with a sickening CRACK.
Jake shrieked in pain, his leg collapsing beneath him as he crashed heavily onto the hard tile floor, dropping the silenced firearm.
Before he could reach for it, Evelyn lunged forward, slamming her tactical boot down onto his wrist, pinning him to the floor, while wrapping her arms around his neck in a tight chokehold.
Jake thrashed violently, his eyes bulging as he clawed helplessly at Evelyn’s arms, his pristine suit tearing and smudging with dirt and blood.
I picked up the dropped pistol, clicked the safety on, and stood over the man I had spent sixteen years loving—the man who had viewed my son and me as nothing more than sacrificial line items on an offshore balance sheet.
"It's over, Jake," I said, looking down into his desperate, suffused face.
He tried to speak, but only a gurgling gasp escaped his lips.
The heavy steel door of the bathroom clicked open behind me.
Ethan stepped out into the light, holding the rusty wrench he had carried all the way from our basement. He looked at his father lying defeated on the floor, then looked up at me.

Outside, the loud, echoing wail of dozens of police sirens filled the night sky as state troopers and federal assault teams finally breached the outer perimeter, securing the facility.
The siege was over.
