Chapter 2 - Behind Closed Doors

I backed away from the crack in the door, my heart pounding so loudly in my ears that I was terrified they would hear it through the wood. I pressed my back against the hallway wallpaper, forcing myself to take slow, controlled breaths.

In my fifteen years of marriage to David, I believed I knew everything about him. He was a quiet, meticulous compliance officer for a regional commercial bank. He was soft-spoken, preferred reading in his study to social gatherings, and had always been cautious with money—almost to a fault.

Now, standing five feet away from a hidden fortune tucked inside my daughter's bedroom wardrobe, I realized I had been living with a stranger.

I crept back down the hallway toward the kitchen. Maya shifted slightly on her makeshift floor bed, letting out a small, tired sigh. I knelt beside her again, this time gently rubbing her back until her dark eyes slowly fluttered open.

"Mommy?" she rasped, her voice thick with sleep. She sat up quickly, her eyes wide with a mix of relief and sudden terror. "Mommy, you're home early!"

"Shh, baby, keep your voice down," I whispered, holding her shoulders. "Why are you sleeping out here? What is Daddy doing in your room?"

Tears immediately filled Maya’s eyes. She pulled the thin blanket tighter around herself. "Daddy said I couldn't go in my room starting Thursday. He said there was bad mold in the walls and that it wasn't safe for me. He locked the door and told me to sleep on the sofa."

"Then why are you on the floor?" I asked, my blood boiling.

"The lady came two nights ago," Maya sobbed quietly, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "She... she took over the living room. They were yelling, arguing about money and passports. The lady told me I was in the way and pushed my things into the kitchen. Mommy, I wanted to call you, but Daddy took my phone. He said it was broken."

A cold, lethal clarity settled over me. He hadn't just lied to me; he had emotionally abused and neglected our twelve-year-old child in her own home to facilitate an illicit getaway scheme.

"Listen to me, Maya," I said, looking straight into her eyes. "You did nothing wrong. I am here now, and nothing bad is going to happen to you. I need you to put on your boots and your heavy jacket right now."

"Where are we going?"

"To Aunt Clara's house," I said softly, referring to my elder sister who lived twenty minutes away. "I am going to take you to the car, and then I am going to deal with your father."

"Is Daddy in trouble?" she asked nervously.

"Daddy made choices," I replied firmly. "And now he has to answer for them."

I quietly unlocked the side door leading to the garage, guided Maya into my SUV, locked the doors, and kept the engine off. I dialed my sister Clara on speed dial.

"Sarah? It's midnight, is everything okay?" Clara answered, her voice sleepy.

"Clara, I need you to listen to me carefully," I said, keeping my tone dead even. "I am sending Maya to your house in an Uber right now. Do not ask her complicated questions. Just give her a warm bed, lock your doors, and wait for my call."

"Sarah, what's going on?! Where are you?"

"I am at home," I said, staring back at the dimly lit house. "David is hiding millions of dollars in untraceable assets in Maya's bedroom, and he has an accomplice inside. I'm calling the authorities, but I need Maya safe first."

There was a sharp gasp on the other end. "I'm coming to pick her up myself. Give me fifteen minutes. Sarah, do not go back inside that house alone!"

"I'm not going to argue with him, Clara," I said, watching the faint glow of light still flickering from Maya's upstairs window. "I'm going to ruin him."
