Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The sound of duct tape being pulled sharply off a roll echoed down the top floor corridor.
I flattened myself against the wall outside Maya’s bedroom door, holding my phone high near the doorframe to record the interior.
Through the screen, I watched David and the woman sealing heavy black plastic crates with reinforced tape. The room looked like a war zone. The floorboards had been pried open in two places, revealing hidden steel lockboxes beneath the joists.
"That's the last of the bonds," the woman said, wiping her brow with the back of her gloved hand. "The transport van will be at the rear alley in twenty minutes. Once we load these, we head straight to the airfield in county."
"What about Sarah and Maya?" David asked, his voice strained, trembling with exhaustion. "If Sarah gets home tomorrow and finds the room stripped—"
"Who cares?!" the woman snapped, grabbing David by his collar. "You idiot! You made sixteen million dollars off this laundering operation! You have a forged passport waiting for you in Zurich! You leave a couple hundred grand in a bank account for her, she gets the house, and you disappear! She's a boring corporate accountant, David. She'll cry, file for divorce, and move on with her life!"
David stood there, staring at the floor. He didn't defend me. He didn't mention his daughter. He simply nodded.
"Yeah," David muttered softly. "You're right. She never paid attention to what I did anyway."
That was enough.
I stepped straight into the open doorway, holding my phone steadily in front of me, recording both of their shocked faces in full 4K resolution.
"Actually, David," I said, my voice echoing sharply off the bare walls, "I paid attention to every single detail."
David spun around, dropping his crowbar with a deafening CLANG against the hardwood floor. His face went as white as a sheet, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Sarah?!" he stammered, his eyes bulging. "You... you're not supposed to be home until tomorrow!"
The woman beside him immediately reached into her jacket pocket, her eyes turning lethal. "David, who the hell is this?!"
"Don't even think about pulling whatever is in your pocket," I said, pointing my phone directly at her. "Your faces, your crates, your conversation, and your entire illegal vault are currently live-streaming to a federal secure server. And if you take one step toward me, you won't just be facing financial fraud charges—you'll be facing armed robbery and attempted murder."
The woman froze, her hand hovering inside her coat.
"Sarah, please!" David pleaded, taking a desperate step forward, his hands raised. "You don't understand! I did this for us! For our family's future! The bank was going to pass me over for promotion again! We were going to be set for life!"
"For us?" I laughed, a cold, bitter sound. "You locked your twelve-year-old daughter out of her bedroom, made her sleep on a cold kitchen floor, stole her phone, and let a criminal push her around while you hid stolen cartel money in her closet!"
"I didn't mean for Maya to get caught in the middle—"
"You ruined her home, David!" I yelled, my composure finally breaking into pure, righteous fury. "You sold out your daughter and your wife for black-market crates!"
Outside, the red and blue emergency lights suddenly flashed through the rain-slicked window blinds, casting long, strobing shadows across the stripped bedroom walls. The low rumble of approaching police cruisers and tactical vans rumbled through the floorboards.
May you like
The woman cursed loudly, dropping her shoulder bag and running toward the window.
"Nobody move!" a loud voice boomed through a megaphone from the front yard. "This is the FBI! The house is surrounded! Step away from the windows and put your hands on your heads!"
