Chapter 3 - THE CALL OF JUSTICE

On the other end of the line, Arthur Thorne—a veteran senior judge of the State Superior Court and a formidable legal mind—was silent for two full seconds. He had worked alongside me on high-profile public corruption cases for half a decade and knew I was not a person prone to drama or exaggeration.

"Elena," Judge Thorne said, his voice dropping into a serious, concerned register. "What is happening?"

"My brother, Julian Vance, and his wife, Chloe, have been systematically committing severe elder abuse, grand larceny, deed fraud, and aggravated assault against my seventy-eighth-year-old mother," I said, my tone flat, razor-sharp, and stripped of all emotion. "I am currently at the residence. I have just completed a forensic digital documentation of severe physical injuries, including rope restraints, deep tissue contusions, and extreme neglect. I have also recorded a sworn victim statement detailing forced signature under duress and the illegal liquidation of over eight hundred thousand dollars in real estate and liquid assets."

A sharp intake of breath came over the receiver. "Is your mother in immediate danger?"

"I have her stabilized in a locked room," I replied. "However, the perpetrators are currently out of the house and will return within the hour. If they realize I have discovered the abuse, there is a critical risk of evidence destruction, flight, or escalated violence against my mother."

"Send me the evidence files immediately via secure state transit," Judge Thorne ordered instantly. "I am opening an emergency judicial session from my home chambers right now. Who is the local law enforcement authority in Blackwood?"

"Sheriff Thomas Miller," I answered. "He’s a long-time family friend of my late father, but Julian has spent the last year grooming the local community with his victim routine. I need state police involvement to ensure absolute chain-of-custody compliance and prevent any local interference."

"Consider it done," Thorne said firmly. "I am issuing an immediate temporary restraining order, an emergency order of protection granting you sole temporary guardianship of Eleanor Vance, and a search and seizure warrant for the premises. Furthermore, I am contacting Captain Robert Mercer of the State Police Major Crimes Unit. He will have a tactical detail at your residence in thirty minutes. Do not confront them alone, Elena."

"I won't," I said. "I'm going to sit right here and wait for them to come home."

"Elena," Thorne added softly before hanging up. "I am so sorry. Hold tight. The law is on its way."

I disconnected the call and immediately transmitted the high-resolution photo folders, video statement, and digital asset tracking logs directly to Thorne’s secure court portal.

I turned to my mother. She was watching me with wide, tear-filled eyes, clutching her blanket to her chest.

"Who was that?" she whispered nervously.

"That was a judge, Mom," I said, walking over to sit beside her on the bed. I took her small, cold hands into mine. "In less than an hour, the state police are going to arrive at this house. Julian and Chloe are going to be arrested. They will never, ever lay a hand on you again."

She began to weep softly, bowing her head against my shoulder. "What will happen to the house? What will happen to Julian? He's my son, Elena... how could he do this to me?"

"He chose to become a predator, Mom," I said gently but firmly. "And predators belong in a cage."

For the next twenty minutes, I sat with my mother, humming the old lullabies she used to sing to me when I was a little girl, feeling her trembling body gradually settle into peace. The terror that had governed her life for eight horrific months was finally beginning to break.

At 8:40 p.m., the faint crunch of tires on gravel echoed from the driveway outside.

Headlights flashed across the closed curtains of the bedroom window. Julian’s luxury sports car had returned.

I stood up slowly, smoothing down the front of my blazer. I pulled my phone from my pocket, confirming that Captain Mercer’s state police cruisers were positioned two blocks away, waiting for my signal to move in once the perpetrators were safely inside the residence.

"Stay in this room, Mom," I said, locking the bedroom door from the outside with the skeleton key I had found in the hallway linen closet. "I'll be right downstairs."

I walked down the grand oak staircase, every step deliberate and measured.

The front door unlocked, and Julian and Chloe walked into the foyer, laughing loudly. Chloe was carrying a doggy bag from the restaurant, while Julian was casually tossing his luxury car keys into the decorative brass bowl on the entry table. They looked relaxed, satisfied, completely unaware that the ground beneath their feet had already turned to dust.

They froze when they saw me standing at the bottom of the stairs, my arms crossed over my chest, my face an unreadable mask of stone.

"Elena?" Julian blinked, frowning slightly as he took off his designer coat. "What are you doing still up? Where's Mom?"

"She's upstairs sleeping," I said softly.

Chloe scoffed, tossing her handbag onto the couch. "Well, I hope you didn't let her indulge in any silly stories. She gets terribly melodramatic when she has an audience."

"She didn't tell silly stories, Chloe," I said, stepping into the center of the living room. "She showed me her wrists."

The atmosphere in the foyer instantly shattered.
