Chapter 4 - THE THUNDER OF THE LAW

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His hand hovered over his coat hook, his face draining of all color in a matter of seconds. Beside him, Chloe gasped, her eyes darting frantically toward the staircase before snapping back to me with a fierce, venomous glare.

"What the hell are you talking about?" Julian demanded, forcing his voice into an aggressive, confrontational boom. "She's unstable, Elena! I told you she falls down! She loses her balance all the time! We try to protect her, but she resists us—"

"Save it for the grand jury, Julian," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a register so terrifyingly cold that Julian actually took a half-step backward. "I didn't just look at her injuries. I spent the last two hours conducting a full forensic documentation. I photographed the rope burns on her wrists. I documented the deep tissue trauma on her ribs and back. I took a sworn video deposition detailing how you tied her to her bedposts when she asked about her bank accounts, and how Chloe physically assaulted her to force her signature on deed transfers."

Chloe’s posture shifted from surprised panic to pure, hysterical rage. She took two steps toward me, her face contorted with malice, pointing a manicured finger at my nose.

"You arrogant little bitch!" Chloe shrieked. "You think you can come in here after disappearing for a year and tell us how to run this house?! We have power of attorney! We have legal guardianship paperwork signed and notarized! You have nothing! No court in this county will take the word of an old, senile woman over us!"

"Actually, Chloe," I replied smoothly, pulling my state bar credentials and official Department of Justice identification badge from my pocket and holding them up to her face, "the State Superior Court takes my word very seriously."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror as he recognized the gold seal on my badge. He had spent months convincing himself I was just an absent sister working a middle-management corporate job. He had completely forgotten that I was an Assistant Attorney General specializing in financial fraud and elder exploitation.

"Elena... wait," Julian stammered, his confident demeanor crumbling into desperate sweat. "Let's talk about this. We're family! We can work this out! I was under immense stress... the medical bills, the maintenance on the house... I lost control a couple of times, I admit it! But I did it to keep the estate together!"

"You sold her lake cabin for four hundred thousand dollars and transferred the funds to an offshore shell account in the Cayman Islands last Tuesday, Julian," I said, reciting the financial tracking numbers from memory. "You liquidated six hundred thousand dollars from her Vanguard accounts. You bought that sports car in your driveway with her life savings. That isn't keeping the estate together. That is systematic, malicious grand larceny."

"You traitor!" Chloe screamed, lunging toward the sofa where her handbag lay, likely reaching for her phone or the keys to the car. "Julian, get the keys! We're leaving!"

Before Julian could even move a muscle, the night sky outside the drawn living room curtains erupted into a blinding storm of flashing red and blue lights.

The heavy thrum of high-powered engines shook the windows as four state police cruisers and an armored tactical command unit pulled onto the lawn, blocking the driveway entirely.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The front door echoed with the force of heavy tactical boots striking the porch.

"STATE POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR IMMEDIATELY! WE HAVE A WARRANT FOR ARREST AND SEARCH OF PREMISES!" a amplified voice boomed through a megaphone outside.

Julian let out a choked, terrified cry, stumbling backward into the display cabinet, shattering several antique crystal glasses. "Elena... please! Don't do this! They'll destroy my life! I'll go to prison!"

"You should have thought about prison before you tied our mother to a bed, Julian," I said, walking past him to pull the front door wide open.

Captain Robert Mercer, a towering man in full tactical state police armor, stepped into the foyer, flanked by four armed officers with flex-cuffs drawn. Behind them, two emergency medical technicians carrying trauma kits rushed past into the hallway.

"Assistant Attorney General Vance?" Mercer asked, crisp and professional.

"In here, Captain," I said, pointing toward the living room. "Julian Vance and Chloe Vance. The emergency protective order and felony arrest warrants were signed thirty minutes ago by Judge Thorne. Charge them with aggravated elder abuse, kidnapping, grand larceny, deed fraud, and assault under duress."

"NO! GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME!" Chloe shrieked as two state troopers pinned her against the wall, forcing her arms behind her back and snapping the steel handcuffs onto her wrists. Her expensive cashmere sweater was torn in the struggle, her hair falling wildly over her face. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! DO YOU KNOW WHO MY FAMILY IS?!"

"You have the right to remain silent," the trooper recited dryly, pulling her forcefully out the front door toward the waiting transport van. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Julian didn't fight. He collapsed onto his knees on the hardwood floor, sobbing uncontrollably, tears and sweat dripping off his chin as Trooper Rodriguez pulled his arms back and cuffed him.

"Elena... please..." Julian wept, looking up at me with pitiful, terrified eyes. "Tell them it's a mistake... please, sister... I'm your brother..."

I stood over him, my face cold, hard, and unyielding.

"I don't have a brother," I said quietly. "Take him away, Captain."
