Part 2: The Secret Ashley Refused to Lose

Ashley stepped out of the black SUV as if she owned the parking lot.

The afternoon sun reflected off her sunglasses. Her white designer suit looked absurdly expensive against the faded shelter building behind her. The two attorneys walking beside her carried leather briefcases and expressions that suggested they had spent years helping wealthy people avoid consequences.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Emily instinctively tightened her hold on the twins.

The babies stirred against her chest.

One of them yawned.

The simple sound shattered something inside Michael.

Those should have been ordinary moments.

First smiles.

First steps.

Sleepless nights.

Midnight feedings.

Instead, he had missed everything.

Because he had believed a lie.

Ashley removed her sunglasses slowly.

“Michael,” she said with a smile. “There you are.”

The smile made his stomach turn.

“How did you find me?”

Ashley shrugged.

“You forget how much I know about your life.”

One of the attorneys stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

“No.”

The word came out sharper than intended.

The attorney blinked.

Michael took another step toward Emily.

“No more private conversations.”

Ashley laughed softly.

“Still dramatic.”

Emily remained silent.

But Michael noticed something.

She looked frightened.

Not angry.

Not bitter.

Scared.

As though Ashley's appearance represented something much worse than a ruined engagement.

Ashley noticed it too.

Her smile widened.

“Emily looks nervous.”

“Leave her alone,” Michael said.

Ashley tilted her head.

“Interesting.”

Her gaze moved between them.

“You finally believe her.”

Michael clenched his fists.

“I know everything.”

For the first time, Ashley's expression flickered.

Only for a second.

But Michael saw it.

“The fake affair.”

Silence.

“The planted necklace.”

Ashley said nothing.

“The stolen hospital records.”

Now the attorneys looked uncomfortable.

Michael stepped closer.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

Ashley folded her arms.

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You destroyed your own marriage.”

Michael stared.

“You were so eager to believe the worst about her.”

Emily looked down.

The words hurt because they were true.

Ashley continued.

“I just helped you see what you already wanted to see.”

The accusation landed like a punch.

Because deep down, Michael knew she wasn't entirely wrong.

He had loved Emily.

But when the evidence appeared, he had chosen suspicion instead of trust.

He had chosen pride.

Ashley smiled.

“That's why this isn't really my fault.”

“Stop.”

The voice came from Emily.

Everyone turned.

For the first time since Michael arrived, she spoke directly to Ashley.

“Stop pretending.”

Ashley raised an eyebrow.

“Pretending what?”

“That you ever loved him.”

The shelter parking lot fell silent.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“But you didn't want Michael.”

Her voice trembled.

“You wanted what belonged to him.”

Ashley stared at her.

For several long seconds.

Then she laughed.

And the sound chilled everyone.

“You always were smarter than he realized.”

Michael felt another wave of nausea.

Because Ashley wasn't denying it.

She wasn't denying any of it.

One of the attorneys cleared his throat.

“Miss Bennett—”

“Be quiet.”

The attorney immediately stopped talking.

Ashley looked at Michael.

“You really want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

She smiled again.

And this time there was no charm left in it.

Only calculation.

“I never cared about the engagement.”

Michael felt cold.

“What?”

“The ring was nice.”

She shrugged.

“The house was nice too.”

“Then why?”

Ashley looked directly into his eyes.

“Because of Carter Holdings.”

Michael froze.

His family's company.

The corporation his grandfather had built from nothing.

Ashley continued.

“Your grandfather was dying.”

The words hit hard.

He had passed away eighteen months earlier.

“If we'd gotten married, I would have become part of the family.”

Michael's stomach dropped.

“And eventually,” Ashley said, “part owner.”

One of the attorneys closed his eyes.

As though he wished he were somewhere else.

“You manipulated me for stock shares?”

Ashley smiled.

“Among other things.”

Emily looked horrified.

Even after everything, she seemed shocked by the depth of Ashley's greed.

But Ashley wasn't finished.

“There was one problem.”

She pointed toward Emily.

“Her.”

Michael turned.

Emily stood perfectly still.

Holding the twins.

“You still loved your wife.”

Michael swallowed.

Ashley laughed.

“You tried to convince yourself otherwise.”

The words cut deeper than Michael expected.

Because they were true.

Every date.

Every dinner.

Every attempt to move on.

Part of him had still been looking for Emily.

Even while blaming her.

Ashley continued.

“So I made sure there was no way back.”

Michael felt rage building.

“You destroyed her life.”

“No.”

Ashley's eyes hardened.

“I removed an obstacle.”

The twins suddenly began crying.

Both at once.

Emily immediately rocked them gently.

Whispering soft words.

Comforting them.

Protecting them.

Watching her, Michael felt his chest tighten.

For a year she had done this alone.

Completely alone.

Ashley noticed where he was looking.

And for the first time, genuine irritation crossed her face.

“You still look at her that way.”

Michael turned.

“What way?”

“The way you always did.”

Silence.

“You never looked at me like that.”

The confession surprised everyone.

Including Ashley herself.

For a moment she seemed vulnerable.

Then the mask returned.

One of the attorneys stepped forward again.

“Mr. Carter, regardless of personal matters, there is still a legal issue.”

Michael frowned.

“What legal issue?”

The attorney opened a folder.

His expression looked apologetic.

“Custody.”

Emily went pale.

Michael's heart stopped.

“What?”

Ashley smiled.

A slow, poisonous smile.

“There it is.”

The attorney continued carefully.

“Miss Bennett recently filed documents questioning Ms. Carter's fitness as a parent.”

Emily looked shocked.

Michael felt fury explode inside him.

“She what?”

Ashley folded her arms.

“The shelter.”

She nodded toward the building.

“The poverty.”

Then toward the twins.

“Children deserve stability.”

“You did this?”

“Of course.”

Michael couldn't believe what he was hearing.

“You framed her.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed our marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You hid my children.”

“Yes.”

“And now you're trying to take them away?”

Ashley's smile widened.

“Now you're finally paying attention.”

Emily looked close to tears.

The attorney opened another document.

“There's more.”

Michael turned.

The attorney hesitated.

Then spoke.

“Miss Bennett claims she possesses evidence that could prevent both of you from obtaining custody.”

The parking lot went silent.

Michael stared.

“What evidence?”

Ashley smiled.

A smile filled with triumph.

Then she reached into her handbag.

And removed a thin manila folder.

“Because,” she said softly, “there's one thing neither of you knows about the night Emily left.”

Michael felt a chill crawl down his spine.

Emily's face lost all color.

May you like

And when Ashley slowly opened the folder, Michael realized the nightmare wasn't over.

It was only getting worse.
