Part 3: The Secret Inside the Folder

The manila folder felt heavier than it looked.

Ashley held it with the confidence of someone who believed she still controlled the ending.

Michael's pulse hammered in his ears.

Beside him, Emily had gone completely still.

Even the twins seemed quieter, sensing the tension radiating through the adults around them.

"What is it?" Michael demanded.

Ashley didn't answer immediately.

She enjoyed moments like this.

Always had.

Control was her favorite weapon.

Slowly, she opened the folder and removed several documents.

Then she handed them to one of the attorneys.

The attorney's face tightened as he reviewed them.

"Miss Bennett..."

"Read it."

The attorney hesitated.

"Now."

Finally, he cleared his throat.

"The documents appear to show that approximately fourteen months ago, funds were transferred from a Carter Holdings charitable trust into an unauthorized private account."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

The attorney continued.

"The account holder listed is Emily Carter."

Emily's eyes widened.

"No."

Ashley smiled.

"There it is."

Michael grabbed the papers.

His stomach dropped.

Emily's name was everywhere.

Account numbers.

Transfer confirmations.

Electronic signatures.

Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.

The evidence appeared devastating.

But something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Because Michael knew Emily.

The woman who clipped coupons despite having access to his bank accounts.

The woman who once returned a cashier's accidental extra twenty dollars because "it wasn't hers."

She would never steal.

Emily looked horrified.

"I've never seen those documents."

Ashley laughed.

"That's exactly what a thief would say."

Michael ignored her.

He kept reading.

Then suddenly froze.

A tiny detail.

Almost invisible.

But enough.

His eyes narrowed.

The transfer dates.

Every transaction had supposedly occurred during a period when Emily had been hospitalized following a car accident.

Michael remembered.

Three days.

Broken wrist.

Concussion.

She hadn't even been conscious during some of those dates.

"Ashley."

Her smile remained.

"What?"

Michael looked up slowly.

"These documents are fake."

The smile vanished.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"What?"

"Emily was in the hospital."

Silence.

"You created transfers while she was unconscious."

One of the attorneys immediately took the paperwork back.

His face darkened as he checked the dates.

Then checked again.

"Oh God."

Ashley suddenly looked uncomfortable.

The attorney looked at her.

"Why wasn't this disclosed?"

"A clerical oversight."

The attorney laughed bitterly.

"No."

His voice was colder now.

"This is fraud."

For the first time all afternoon, Ashley appeared nervous.

Michael felt hope.

Tiny.

Fragile.

But real.

Then Ashley did something unexpected.

She smiled.

Again.

The smile made Michael's blood run cold.

"Fine."

She slipped another document from the folder.

"This isn't the important part."

The parking lot went silent.

"What do you mean?" Michael asked.

Ashley's eyes moved toward the twins.

Then toward Emily.

And finally back to Michael.

"The important part is the DNA test."

Everything stopped.

Emily looked confused.

Michael felt a knot form in his stomach.

"What DNA test?"

Ashley handed over another paper.

The attorney examined it.

His face changed.

"What is this?"

"A paternity report."

Michael grabbed it.

His hands shook.

He scanned the page.

Then scanned it again.

His mind refused to process the words.

Probability of paternity: 0%.

"No."

Emily looked equally shocked.

"No."

Ashley folded her arms.

"There it is."

The twins began crying again.

Michael barely heard them.

The world felt distant.

Muted.

Impossible.

He stared at Emily.

Emily stared back.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Michael..."

But he couldn't think.

Couldn't breathe.

Couldn't understand.

The twins looked exactly like him.

The timing matched perfectly.

Everything matched.

Yet the paper claimed they weren't his.

Ashley smiled triumphantly.

"You see now."

The attorney looked deeply uncomfortable.

"Miss Bennett, where exactly did this report come from?"

"A private laboratory."

"Which laboratory?"

Ashley named a company.

The attorney immediately frowned.

"I've never heard of them."

Michael suddenly remembered something.

David Reynolds.

The investigator.

He reached for his phone.

Ashley noticed.

And for the first time, genuine panic flashed across her face.

A tiny crack.

But enough.

Michael stepped away and called immediately.

David answered on the second ring.

"Michael?"

"I need a favor."

"What happened?"

Michael explained everything.

The folder.

The transfers.

The DNA report.

There was silence.

Then David sighed.

"Don't move."

"What?"

"Give me thirty minutes."

Michael frowned.

"David—"

"Trust me."

Then the line disconnected.

Ashley looked uneasy now.

The confidence she'd carried into the parking lot was fading.

Thirty-seven minutes later, another vehicle arrived.

A dark sedan.

David Reynolds stepped out.

But he wasn't alone.

Two people followed him.

A forensic accountant.

And a federal investigator.

The moment Ashley saw them, her face went white.

David walked straight toward Michael.

Holding a thick file.

"What is this?" Ashley snapped.

David ignored her.

Instead, he handed Michael the folder.

"Everything."

Michael opened it.

His heart nearly stopped.

Inside were records.

Emails.

Bank transfers.

Phone logs.

Dozens of documents.

Evidence connecting Ashley to fraud stretching back years.

Not just against Emily.

Against multiple victims.

Multiple companies.

Multiple relationships.

The federal investigator stepped forward.

"Miss Bennett."

Ashley's breathing quickened.

"We've been investigating you for six months."

Silence.

The attorney slowly backed away from her.

The second attorney did the same.

Neither wanted to be standing beside her anymore.

Ashley looked around desperately.

"No."

The investigator continued.

"You forged financial documents."

"No."

"You falsified evidence."

"No."

"You illegally accessed medical records."

Ashley's voice cracked.

"No."

Then David handed Michael one final document.

A genuine DNA report.

Authorized by the hospital.

Verified by state records.

Michael's hands trembled as he read it.

Probability of paternity:

99.9999%.

The twins were his.

His son.

His daughter.

A year of stolen memories crashed into him all at once.

First words.

First smiles.

First steps he would never get back.

Tears filled his eyes.

Across from him, Emily began crying too.

Not because she was surprised.

Because someone had finally believed the truth.

The investigator turned toward Ashley.

"We're placing you under arrest."

The parking lot exploded into chaos.

Ashley stepped backward.

Then another step.

Then suddenly turned and ran.

Straight toward the SUV.

But she never made it.

Two officers emerged from another vehicle and intercepted her before she reached the door.

Ashley screamed.

Fought.

Cursed.

Threatened.

But nobody listened anymore.

Because the truth was finally louder than her lies.

As officers placed handcuffs on her wrists, she looked directly at Michael.

Hatred burned in her eyes.

"You'll regret this."

Michael stared back.

"No."

His voice was calm.

Certain.

"I already regret enough."

Ashley was pushed into the back of a police vehicle.

The door slammed shut.

And for the first time in over a year...

The nightmare began to end.

But as Michael turned back toward Emily and the twins, he noticed something that made his heart tighten again.

Emily wasn't smiling.

She wasn't relieved.

She looked terrified.

As though Ashley's arrest had solved one problem...

But revealed another.

And when Emily finally spoke, her trembling words introduced a new fear Michael had never considered.

"Michael..."

He stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Emily wiped away tears.

Then looked down at the twins.

"The doctors found something three weeks ago."

His stomach dropped.

"What?"

May you like

Emily's voice broke.

And the answer changed everything.
