Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Dark

An absolute, heavy silence fell over the phone line. The static seemed to freeze in mid-air.
"Who... who is this?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into a defensive, terrified register. "Emily, who is on the phone with you?!"
"Daniel, listen to my voice," Dr. Wright pleaded, tears streaming freely down his weathered cheeks as he held the device close. "My name is Michael Wright. I am standing in Delivery Room 3 right beside Emily and your newborn son. I am holding your baby, Daniel! He has our family's birthmark!"
A sharp, ragged gasp echoed from Ethan's end of the line. "Dr... Dr. Wright?"
"Yes, my boy! Yes!" Michael sobbed joyfully. "I never abandoned you! I was lied to! I was told you died the night you were born! I held a wrapped blanket thinking I was mourning my dead child! I have spent thirty-two years grieving for you every single day of my life!"
"I... I thought you were part of it," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with an overwhelming wave of shock and realization. "I found records showing your signature on the disposal authorization form... I thought you didn't want me..."
"Those signatures were forged by Harold Vance!" Michael yelled fiercely. "Vance and Martha lied to me! They took you from your mother, Helen, while she was fighting for her life in an ICU coma! Daniel, please... listen to me. I am Chief of Medicine here, but I swear to you on my life, I will protect Emily and my grandson with everything I have. You don't have to run anymore. Come home, son. Please, come home."
For several agonizing seconds, all we could hear was the heavy, emotional weeping of a son who had finally found his true identity.
"I'm ten miles away from Oak Ridge," Ethan choked out through his tears. "I'm coming straight to the hospital, Dad."
The word Dad hung in the air, sweet and healing, bringing a radiant, tearful smile to Dr. Wright's face.
"Drive safely, Daniel," Dr. Wright said softly. "We will be waiting for you."
The call disconnected. Dr. Wright handed the phone back to me, his shoulders visibly lifting as if a mountain of dark weight had been pulled off his body. He looked down at me, his eyes shining with a profound, quiet gratitude.
"Thank you, Emily," he whispered. "If you hadn't come to this hospital today... if you hadn't been strong enough to bring this beautiful boy into the world... I would have died without ever knowing my son was alive."
"He's going to be here soon," I said, a soft smile finally breaking through my exhaustion. "Your son is coming home."
Suddenly, the electronic lock on the delivery room door clicked sharply.
The heavy mahogany door swung open. But it wasn't a nurse or a doctor coming to check my vital signs.
Standing in the doorway was a tall, elderly man in an expensive charcoal suit, accompanied by two imposing, burly men wearing dark trench coats. The elderly man had slicked-back white hair, sharp blue eyes, and an expression of cold, ruthless authority.
Dr. Wright's posture instantly went rigid. The warmth in the room vanished, replaced by an icy, suffocating dread.
"Harold," Dr. Wright spat, his voice turning into a dangerous, guttural growl.
May you like
It was Dr. Harold Vance—the former Chief of Surgery who had faked Daniel's death thirty-two years ago.
"Hello, Michael," Dr. Vance said smoothly, stepping into the room as his two thugs positioned themselves blocking the doorway. Vance looked at me, then at the baby in my arms, a cruel, mocking smile stretching across his wrinkled face. "I heard a rumor that a very interesting baby was delivered in Room 3 today. I see the family resemblance is as curse-like as ever."
