Chapter 7 - The Battle for the Newborn

Ethan swung the heavy iron wrench with terrifying speed, striking the armed guard's wrist before he could aim the pistol. The gun clattered out of the man's grip, sliding across the slick linoleum floor right toward my bed.
The disarmed guard bellowed in rage, tackling Ethan to the floor. The two men crashed into the plastic bassinet, sending it spinning into the corner.
Ethan fought like a man possessed. Seven months of fear, rage, and love for the family he had been forced to abandon exploded into raw physical power. He slammed his elbow into the guard's jaw, broke free from his grip, and grabbed a metal IV pole, swinging it like a staff to knock the second guard unconscious against the doorframe.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wright had pinned the elderly Dr. Vance to the ground, holding him in a firm, professional chokehold until the corrupt former surgeon gasped for air, his eyes rolling back in his head.
"Ethan!" I cried out, tears streaming down my face.
Ethan turned toward me. His face was bruised, his clothes were soaked with rain, but his eyes were burning with an intensity I had never seen before. He took three long strides toward my bed and fell to his knees beside me.
For the first time in seven long, agonizing months, Ethan looked at me. Then, he looked down at the tiny, swaddled bundle resting against my chest.
His breathing hitched. His hands, bruised and bleeding at the knuckles, hovered over our son with absolute reverence and fear, as if he were afraid the baby would break if he touched him.
"Emily..." Ethan choked out, his voice shattering into raw, uncontrollable sobs. "I'm so sorry... I'm so, so sorry..."
"He's here, Ethan," I whispered, reaching out with one hand to cup his damp, cold cheek. "Our little boy is here."
Ethan leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine, his tears falling onto my shoulder as he wrapped his strong arms gently around both of us. "I never stopped loving you, Emily. Not for a single second. Every day I was away was a living hell."
"I know," I cried, kissing his temple. "I know."
Beside us, Dr. Wright stood up, panting heavily as he used a pair of heavy surgical restraints from a side tray to bind Dr. Vance's hands tightly behind his back. He then retrieved the fallen handgun from the floor, locking the safety before turning to look at his son.
Father and son locked eyes across the room.
The air grew still. The chaos of the fight faded into the background.
Ethan slowly rose to his feet, facing the tall, silver-haired doctor. Thirty-two years of stolen time, forged death certificates, and profound grief hung between them in the quiet room.
Dr. Wright set the weapon safely down on a high counter, taking a hesitant step toward Ethan. "Daniel..."
Ethan swallowed hard, wiping his bloody lip with the back of his hand. He looked at Dr. Wright's face, noticing for the very first time the striking similarities—the identical jawline, the shape of his eyes, and the deep, loving warmth staring back at him.

"Dad," Ethan whispered softly.
Michael opened his arms, and Ethan stepped forward, pulling his biological father into a fierce, desperate embrace. The two men wept openly, clinging to each other as thirty-two years of dark lies shattered completely under the weight of the truth.
