Part 4: The Deal My Father Never Told Me About

The room became silent.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.
I looked at my father.
Waiting.
Hoping he would laugh.
Deny it.
Tell me this man was lying.
But he didn’t.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because my father’s silence was an answer.
“Dad…”
My voice was barely a whisper.
“What deal?”
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked less like the powerful man everyone feared…
And more like a father who had carried a secret for too long.
“I was going to tell you.”
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Everyone always says that.”
My father looked at me.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
My eyes burned.
“You all decide what I can handle.”
“You all hide things from me.”
“You all say it’s protection.”
I pointed toward the man standing across from us.
“And then I find out my entire life has been built on secrets.”
The man watched silently.
Almost enjoying the damage.
My father noticed.
“Don’t listen to him.”
I looked at my father.
“Then tell me the truth.”
He swallowed.
“His name is Victor Hale.”
The same last name.
My stomach tightened.
“Adrian’s father.”
My father nodded.
“Yes.”
Victor stepped closer.
“Your father and I built companies together.”
“We were partners.”
“Friends.”
He smiled bitterly.
“Until money showed us who we really were.”
My father’s jaw tightened.
“That’s not the truth.”
Victor ignored him.
“Thomas wanted to build something clean.”
“He wanted honesty.”
“But I understood something earlier than him.”
“What?”
Victor looked at me.
“People don’t respect kindness.”
“They respect power.”
I stared at him.
“And what does this have to do with Adrian?”
Victor smiled.
“Everything.”
My father stepped forward.
“Enough.”
But Victor continued.
“When Adrian was young, he was weak.”
My hands clenched.
“He was a child.”
Victor shrugged.
“A child who cried too much.”
“A child who trusted too easily.”
My father’s expression changed.
Like he remembered something painful.
Victor looked at him.
“And Thomas hated seeing that.”
I turned.
“Dad?”
He looked away.
“I was wrong.”
Those words shocked me.
Because my father rarely admitted mistakes.
Not ever.
“What did you do?”
He took a slow breath.
“I thought I could protect Adrian.”
“Protect him from what?”
“From becoming like his father.”
Victor laughed.
“And what did you do instead?”
Silence.
My father answered:
“I made a deal with Victor.”
The words hit me.
A deal.
The same word.
The same thing that started everything.
“What kind of deal?”
My father looked at me.
“When Adrian was eighteen…”
“I asked Victor to take him under his company.”
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Why?”
“Because Adrian hated me.”
A pause.
“He thought I was weak.”
I remembered Adrian saying those things.
That I didn’t understand ambition.
That I wasn’t strong enough.
My father continued.
“I wanted him to see the world.”
“I wanted him to learn.”
Victor smiled.
“I taught him.”
My father’s eyes turned cold.
“You corrupted him.”
Victor shrugged.
“I showed him reality.”
My hands shook.
“So Adrian…”
I couldn’t finish.
My father understood.
“Yes.”
“He wasn’t born cruel.”
“He was taught.”
The words hurt.
Because part of me still remembered the man Adrian used to be.
The man who held my hand.
The man who promised he would protect me.
Before he became the man who hurt me.
Victor stepped closer.
“You loved him anyway.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“You saw the good in him.”
“That’s why he hated you.”
My face went cold.
“Why?”
“Because you reminded him of everything he lost.”
“Kindness.”
“Trust.”
“Love.”
Victor’s smile faded.
“And he wanted to destroy anything that made him feel weak.”
My father looked at Victor.
“You’re finished.”
Victor laughed.
“Am I?”
He reached into his coat.
My father immediately moved.
But Victor didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a folder.
Old.
Worn.
He placed it on the table.
“This is the real reason I came.”
I stared.
“What is it?”
Victor looked at me.
“Your mother’s file.”
Everything stopped.
My mother.
The name alone changed the air.
My mother died when I was young.
At least…
That was what I believed.
My father’s face changed.
“Victor.”
The warning in his voice was clear.
Victor smiled.
“Oh, Thomas.”
“You kept so many secrets from her.”
“Don’t pretend you protected her.”
I stepped toward the folder.
“Dad?”
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
I opened it.
The first page was a medical report.
The second page was a photograph.
And the third…
Was a letter.
Written in my mother’s handwriting.
My hands started shaking.
Because the date on the letter was impossible.
It was written…
Two years after she was supposed to have died.
I looked at my father.
My voice broke.
“Dad…”
“What is this?”
He looked at me.
Tears filled his eyes.
And for the first time in my life…
My father looked afraid of telling me the truth.
“She wasn’t dead.”
The world went silent.
“What?”
He whispered:
“Your mother was alive.”
I stepped back.
“No.”
He nodded slowly.
“She disappeared.”
“Why?”
My father looked at Victor.
And Victor answered.
“Because she found out what we were building.”
My blood ran cold.
“What were you building?”
Victor smiled.
“A future.”
A pause.
“A future where people like your father no longer controlled everything.”
My father’s voice became hard.
“Don’t listen to him.”
But Victor looked at me.
“And your mother tried to stop it.”
He leaned closer.
“Which is why she had to vanish.”
The room spun.
My mother.
Alive.
My father’s secret.
Adrian’s corruption.
Victor’s plan.
Everything was connected.
Then my phone rang.
A number I had never seen before.
I answered.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Isabella…”
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it only in my dreams.
“Mom?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes, my daughter.”
My knees almost gave out.
And her next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.
May you like
“Don’t trust your father.”
“He lied about why I left.”
