Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Deception

The basement records room of Vance Investigations was a windowless, concrete space lined with steel filing cabinets and high-capacity data servers. Arthur Vance stood by the secondary terminal, his fingers trembling slightly as he entered an administrative decryption key into the system.

"I only kept these backups because of state record retention laws," Arthur muttered, his back turned to Rowan. "Once a corporate asset protection case concludes, we usually archive the metadata and destroy the hard copies."

"Stop talking and pull up the raw intake logs," Rowan commanded, standing directly behind him, his eyes fixed on the blue light of the monitor.

For forty-five minutes, the room was silent except for the rhythmic clicking of the mechanical keyboard and the hum of the cooling fans. Rowan personally examined every digital folder, every timestamped financial ledger, and every communication log between Vance’s field operatives and the anonymous tip line that had originally initiated the investigation into Megan.

Then, his gaze landed on a secondary directory labeled under a generic corporate classification: Sub-Contractor Variances - Whitmore Holdings.

Rowan’s blood turned to ice within his veins.

He reached over Arthur’s shoulder, grabbed the mouse from the investigator's hand, and double-clicked the directory. A series of private banking transaction receipts filled the screen. They showed a sequence of five separate wire transfers made during the three weeks leading up to Megan’s eviction. Each transfer was for exactly twenty-five thousand dollars, routed from a shell company registered in Delaware directly into Arthur Vance’s personal offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

The authorized signature on the originating corporate account belonged to Claire Whitmore.

"Explain this, Arthur," Rowan said, his voice dropping so low it was barely a whisper, yet it filled the concrete room with a suffocating, lethal pressure.

Arthur Vance closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the steel frame of the terminal housing. He let out a long, defeated sigh that smelled of stale tobacco. "I didn't know it was a fabrication at first, Rowan. I swear to you. The Whitmore family came to me through a secondary reference. Claire told me she was trying to protect you from an unstable spouse who was planning to liquidate your personal holdings before filing for separation."

"You manufactured the evidence," Rowan said, his fist clenching until his nails drew blood from his palms.

"The hotel photographs were staged using a professional model from an agency out of Atlanta who shared Megan’s general proportions," Arthur confessed, his voice shaking. "We used a digital filter to degrade the resolution so the facial features would remain blurred. The offshore bank accounts were established by one of Claire’s financial contacts using a stolen copy of Megan’s social security card from your domestic tax files. And the necklace... Claire had a duplicate key made for your Belle Meade property through the estate management service. She placed the diamond piece in the coat pocket forty-eight hours before we executed the search."

Every single piece of evidence that had destroyed his marriage, every scrap of proof that had turned him against the woman he loved, had been manufactured by the person currently selecting the floral arrangements for his wedding. For an entire year, he had shared his bed, his home, and his corporate secrets with the monster who had orchestrated the systematic destruction of his real family.

Rowan pushed Arthur away from the console, his fingers flying across the keys as he opened the deep-archive folder containing Megan’s medical files that had been pulled from the family health insurance registry during the legal discovery phase.

Tucked beneath the digital insurance waivers were two official birth certificates issued by the Williamson County Medical Center.

Child One: Leo Bellamy.

Mother: Megan Bellamy. Father: Rowan Bellamy.

The digital documents spun before his eyes, the text blurring into an unreadable smear of white and blue light. The room seemed to tilt on its axis, the weight of his own profound stupidity crashing down on him like a collapsing skyscraper. The babies on the highway weren't just a random twist of fate; they were his sons, born into extreme poverty because he had stripped their mother of her reputation, her assets, and her home based on a lie.
