Chapter 5 - The Third Cradle

Rowan’s fingers shook so violently he nearly dropped the mouse as he scrolled past the birth certificates to the final page of the archived file. It was a digital scan of a physical, handwritten document that had been saved as an unindexed image file—a piece of data that was never intended to be included in the primary legal discovery packet.

The note was written on the distinct, heavy cream stationery of the Whitmore family estate. The handwriting was elegant, precise, and instantly recognizable as Claire’s cursive script. It was addressed directly to Arthur Vance's private digital mailbox, dated three days after the twins were born in the county hospital.

Rowan read the words once, his brain struggling to comprehend the absolute blackness of the text. Then he read it a second time, every drop of blood in his body freezing solid until his heart felt like an icy block inside his chest cavity.

The note read:

"Arthur, the hospital contact confirmed that Megan delivered three children on Tuesday night, not two. There was a medical complication during the third delivery, and the infant was transferred to a private neonatal clinic out of state under a closed adoption protocol before the birth registry could be finalized. I have handled the facility costs through the secondary corporate account. If Rowan ever learns the truth about the twins, make sure he never finds out what happened to the third baby. If that child's existence ever links back to the Bellamy estate, our entire asset merger will be voided by the board. Burn this note immediately after reading."

The silence in the concrete basement became deafening, the steady hum of the server fans sounding like a roaring cataract in Rowan’s ears.

A third baby.

Megan hadn't just delivered twins on that kitchen floor or in that county ward; she had carried triplets. And while she was walking down Highway 431 under the burning afternoon sun with two infants strapped to her chest, a third child—his third child—had been systematically taken, hidden away in a private facility out of state to protect a corporate merger and a social climber’s positioning.

Rowan stood up from the terminal, his physical stature towering over the cowering private investigator. He didn't yell, he didn't smash the equipment, and he didn't reach for Arthur’s collar. The corporate executioner inside him, the ruthless operator that had built an international empire, had fully awakened, but this time its target wasn't a market competitor.

He reached down, pulled his phone from his pocket, and dialed his corporate chief of security.

"Get the asset recovery team to my office in fifteen minutes," Rowan said, his voice carrying a cold, crystalline resonance that made Arthur Vance slide back in his chair. "And cancel the wedding catering. We’re going to be spending that money on private warrants."

He turned away from the terminal, leaving the basement records room behind as he stepped out into the night air. The dust of Franklin was still settling, but the hunt for his missing family had officially begun.
