Part 6: The Man Behind the Shadow

I stood there with the phone pressed against my ear long after the call ended.

No one spoke.

Not the detective.

Not the officers.

Not Elena.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

The impossible had happened.

My father had called me.

The man I buried.

The man everyone said was dead.

Was alive.

And he had one warning:

Don’t trust anyone.

Not even my mother.

I looked at the woman I had spent my whole life defending.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who cried beside my father’s funeral portrait.

The woman who told me she loved me.

And now…

The woman who almost buried my wife alive.

A terrible thought entered my mind.

What if she had been lying all along?

We returned to the hospital before sunrise.

Elena was exhausted, but she refused to sleep.

Not after everything.

Not after the truth started crawling out.

“Daniel.”

I sat beside her.

“Yes?”

She looked at me carefully.

“You’re thinking about your mother.”

I didn’t answer.

She knew.

She always knew.

“She raised you.”

I looked down.

“She did.”

“And she hurt you.”

I swallowed.

“I don’t know which one is real anymore.”

Elena reached for my hand.

“Both can be real.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“A person can love someone and still do terrible things.”

Her words stayed with me.

Because that was the hardest truth.

Villains were easy.

Monsters were easy.

But people?

People could be complicated.

People could hug you in the morning and destroy you at night.

At 6:15 a.m., the detective entered the room.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“Mr. Carter.”

I stood.

“What happened?”

He placed a folder on the table.

“We found Victor Blackwood.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“Not far.”

“Is he alive?”

The detective nodded.

“Yes.”

A thousand questions hit me.

“How?”

“Your father’s old security network tracked him.”

I frowned.

“My father?”

The detective looked at me.

“Your father has been watching everything.”

That hurt.

Because part of me felt relieved.

Another part felt betrayed.

“He was alive this whole time.”

The detective nodded.

“And he never came home.”

Why?

The question burned.

Why would a father stay away from his son for twenty years?

Victor was found in an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The police surrounded the building.

I went with them.

Not because it was safe.

Because I needed answers.

Inside, the air smelled like rust and dust.

The warehouse looked empty.

Too empty.

The detective raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

Then we heard it.

A voice.

“Daniel.”

My entire body froze.

Not my father.

Victor.

I stepped forward.

“Where is my father?”

A laugh came from the shadows.

“Still asking the wrong question.”

I clenched my jaw.

“You destroyed my family.”

“No.”

His voice echoed.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

I saw him.

Victor stepped into the light.

Older.

Gray hair.

But his eyes were sharp.

The eyes of someone who believed he was always right.

“You were supposed to disappear.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

He smiled.

“Your father was supposed to give me control.”

“But he chose you.”

I stepped closer.

“What are you talking about?”

Victor tilted his head.

“Your grandfather built the company.”

“Your father expanded it.”

“But you?”

He smiled.

“You were the insurance policy.”

I stared.

“The what?”

“Your grandfather knew greed would destroy his family.”

“He created a final safeguard.”

My stomach tightened.

“The inheritance.”

Victor nodded.

“Not money.”

“Control.”

“Your grandfather placed everything under one condition.”

“What condition?”

Victor smiled.

“That the person who truly protected the family would inherit everything.”

I thought of my grandfather.

The man who loved me.

The man who left everything to Elena and me.

Victor continued.

“He knew your mother would eventually choose power.”

“He knew Marcus was weak.”

“He knew I was dangerous.”

“So he chose you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You’re lying.”

Victor laughed.

“Ask your father.”

The words hit.

Because I wanted to.

I needed to.

Then Victor said something that made my blood run cold.

“Your father didn’t disappear because of me.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He disappeared because he discovered what your mother had done.”

The world went silent.

“My mother?”

Victor nodded.

“She wasn’t trying to steal the company.”

“Not originally.”

“Then what?”

His smile faded.

“She was trying to hide the fact that…”

A pause.

“Your brother Marcus wasn’t your father’s son.”

Everything stopped.

The warehouse disappeared.

I heard nothing.

Not the officers.

Not the wind.

Nothing.

“What did you say?”

Victor stared at me.

“Marcus is not Charles Carter’s child.”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You think your mother protected him because she loved him?”

Victor stepped closer.

“She protected him because he was the evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Victor smiled.

“That your father wasn’t the only man in her life.”

I felt sick.

“No.”

The word came out broken.

Victor continued:

“Your mother betrayed your father years ago.”

“And when Charles found out…”

“He vanished.”

My mind raced.

The lies.

The coffin.

The inheritance.

The secrets.

It was too much.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A familiar voice.

My father.

But this time…

He sounded terrified.

“Daniel.”

I froze.

“Dad?”

A pause.

Then:

“You found Victor.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then my father whispered:

“Run.”

My blood turned cold.

“What?”

“Leave now.”

“Dad, tell me why.”

His voice cracked.

“Because Victor isn’t the biggest threat.”

I looked at Victor.

He was smiling.

My father continued:

“The person who planned all of this…”

May you like

A pause.

“Is standing right beside you.”
