Part 7: The Betrayal Inside the Room

The warehouse went silent.

Not the kind of silence before an attack.

The kind of silence after someone reveals a truth so terrible that your mind refuses to accept it.

I slowly lowered the phone.

My eyes moved around the room.

The officers.

The detective.

Victor.

Everyone.

Someone beside me.

Someone close.

Someone I trusted.

The question was:

Who?

Victor smiled.

Not surprised.

Not worried.

Almost amused.

“You finally understand.”

I stared at him.

“What did you do?”

He shook his head.

“Not me.”

“Then who?”

He looked past me.

Toward the entrance.

My blood froze.

Because the person walking into the warehouse…

Was the last person I expected.

Marcus.

My younger brother.

The same man who stood beside my mother and watched them put Elena in a coffin.

The same man who looked me in the eye and said she was dead.

The same man who had always resented me.

He walked slowly into the room.

The officers immediately raised their weapons.

“Stop.”

Marcus lifted his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

I laughed.

A cold, broken laugh.

“Really?”

“You came to explain?”

His eyes met mine.

For once…

He looked afraid.

“Daniel.”

“Don’t.”

My voice stopped him.

“You don’t get to say my name like we’re brothers.”

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I didn’t care.

“You stood there.”

My voice shook.

“While Elena was dying.”

His face changed.

“I didn’t know what Mother was going to do.”

“You helped her.”

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“I helped her steal the company.”

A pause.

“I didn’t know she would kill Elena.”

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t help.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Marcus looked down.

“I deserve whatever happens.”

For the first time in my life…

My brother sounded like a broken person.

Not an arrogant one.

Not a jealous one.

Just broken.

The detective stepped closer.

“Marcus Carter.”

“You are under arrest.”

Marcus didn’t move.

But before the officer could handcuff him, he said:

“There’s something you need to know.”

Nobody spoke.

He looked at me.

“Mother wasn’t the one who started this.”

My jaw tightened.

“Then who?”

Marcus looked at Victor.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

For the first time…

He looked nervous.

“That’s enough.”

Marcus ignored him.

“The person controlling everything…”

He swallowed.

“Was Grandpa.”

The room exploded.

“What?”

I stared.

“My grandfather?”

Marcus nodded.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“No way.”

He stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen.”

“Grandpa knew everything.”

“He knew Mother was ambitious.”

“He knew Victor wanted control.”

“He knew Dad was in danger.”

I looked at Victor.

Then at Marcus.

Then back.

“What are you saying?”

Marcus whispered:

“He created the entire trap.”

My head spun.

My grandfather.

The man who taught me kindness.

The man who took me fishing.

The man who told me family was everything.

Was he behind this?

No.

It didn’t make sense.

“He’s dead.”

Marcus nodded.

“He is.”

“Then how?”

He looked at me.

“Because he left instructions.”

A chill moved through me.

“Instructions?”

Marcus reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Daniel.

My hands froze.

“Where did you get that?”

“Mother’s safe.”

He looked ashamed.

“I found it before she did.”

The detective took it carefully.

Opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was my grandfather’s.

The detective read silently.

Then his expression changed.

He handed it to me.

I read.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then the family has reached the point I feared.

My heart tightened.

Money reveals people.

Power destroys them.

I continued.

I built this company, but I failed to protect my family from greed.

My hands trembled.

Your mother, Victor, and Marcus will all play their roles.

I stopped.

My grandfather knew.

He knew.

But the greatest danger will not come from them.

It will come from the person who believes they are saving everyone.

My eyes moved to the next line.

Your father.

I froze.

No.

That was impossible.

My grandfather continued:

Charles loves you.

But love makes people blind.

I looked at the words.

He will make choices he believes are for your protection.

He will lie.

He will disappear.

He will sacrifice himself.

A tear fell.

Because it sounded exactly like him.

Then the final sentence:

Daniel, the truth you seek is not about who betrayed you.

It is about who protected you.

A sound came from outside.

Cars.

Many cars.

The detective looked toward the entrance.

“Everyone stay back.”

The doors opened.

A group of armed men entered.

Not police.

Not security.

My heart dropped.

Then the man at the front stepped forward.

And everyone froze.

My father.

Charles Carter.

Alive.

Standing there.

Holding a weapon.

Pointed at Victor.

For a moment…

I forgot how angry I was.

Because all I saw was the man I had missed.

The man I thought was gone.

“Dad…”

His eyes found mine.

And they filled with tears.

“Daniel.”

Then Victor laughed.

A quiet, cruel laugh.

“Perfect.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“Stay away from him.”

Victor smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

My father tightened his grip.

“You’re finished.”

Victor looked at me.

“No.”

Then he said the words that shattered everything:

“Ask your father why he really left you.”

My father went still.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

May you like

Another lie.

Waiting.
