Chapter 2 - The Medical Verdict

Michael blinked, a forced, nervous chuckle escaping his throat. "What are you talking about, Doctor? The pregnancy is fine, right? We just want to see the gender on the screen. We brought the whole family here to celebrate my son."
Dr. Carter sighed quietly, setting the clipboard down onto his stainless-steel tray. He looked around the room at the seven members of the Henderson family, all standing frozen in varying states of anxiety.
"Mr. Henderson," Dr. Carter began, his tone unyielding and cold. "Miss Penelope Vance is indeed pregnant. However, based on the developmental metrics, fetal crown-rump length, and gestational sac measurements displayed on this ultrasound... she is currently precisely twelve weeks pregnant."
Michael frowns, his head tilting in confusion. "Twelve weeks? Wait, no, that’s impossible. We did the math five months ago. She’s supposed to be twenty weeks along! We found out she was pregnant back in early spring!"
Penelope’s face drained of every drop of color. She pulled the paper sheet up to her chest, her breathing becoming quick and shallow. "Doctor... please, you must be miscalculating—"
"I am not miscalculating, Miss Vance," Dr. Carter interrupted firmly. "A twelve-week fetus is biologically distinct from a twenty-week fetus. There is no ambiguity here. Furthermore, according to the ultrasound data and clear anatomical visibility..." He looked directly at Michael. "The child is a girl. But more importantly, calculating back twelve weeks puts the date of conception squarely in late May."
The room seemed to lose all air.
Michael’s brain struggled to process the information, his math racing wildly. "Late May? But... but I was away on a three-week corporate retreat in London for the entirety of May! I didn't return until June fourth!"
A sharp, audible gasp ripped through the room. Eleanor Henderson put her hand over her mouth. Arthur Henderson’s jaw tightened into a rigid, dangerous line.
Michael slowly turned his head to look down at Penelope. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a terrifying mix of disbelief and rising fury.
"Penny..." Michael whispered, his voice cracking. "What is the doctor talking about? Who... whose baby is that?"
Penelope burst into frantic, hysterical tears, clutching the edges of the examination table. "Michael, listen to me! The doctor is wrong! The machine must be broken! I swear to you, it's yours! It has to be yours!"
"I was in London, Penelope!" Michael roared, his sudden shout causing the grandmother, Evelyn, to jump in shock. "I was across the Atlantic Ocean for twenty-one straight days in May! Who were you sleeping with while I was paying for your luxury apartment?!"
Dr. Carter stood up, his expression thoroughly unimpressed by the unfolding drama. "Mr. Henderson, I must ask you to keep your voice down inside this clinic. But since we are discussing genetic timelines, there is a second, far more significant matter I am required to disclose to you regarding your own medical history."
Michael turned back to the doctor, his chest heaving with rage, his hands shaking. "My medical history? What does my medical history have to do with this lying—"
"Five years ago," Dr. Carter cut in smoothly, pulling a sealed medical dossier from his side drawer, "you underwent a bilateral varicocelectomy and subsequent reproductive testing at our affiliated urology center following your failure to conceive additional children with your former wife, Clara Bennett."
Michael froze. "Yeah. So? The doctors said I had low motility back then."
"No, Mr. Henderson," Dr. Carter corrected, pulling a yellowed document from the file. "The final lab results from your comprehensive biopsy three years ago confirmed absolute, severe azoospermia caused by genetic ductal aplasia. To put it in plain, undeniable terms: you are biologically infertile. You have been completely incapable of fathering a biological child for your entire adult life."
The silence that followed was deafening.
It was as if a bomb had detonated inside the small clinic room, shattering the very foundation of Michael Henderson’s reality.
Rachel stepped forward, her face twisted in shock. "What?! That's impossible! Michael has two daughters! Clara gave him two children!"
Dr. Carter looked over his glasses at Rachel, his eyes cool and dismissive. "If Mrs. Clara Bennett bore two children during her marriage to Mr. Henderson, then I suggest Mr. Henderson look into how those children were conceived. Because biologically speaking, Michael Henderson did not provide the genetic material for those girls. Nor did he provide it for the child Miss Vance is currently carrying."
Michael’s legs gave out. The arrogant, wealthy businessman who had signed away his marriage just two hours prior collapsed heavily into a vinyl chair beside the bed. His face was ghostly pale, his eyes staring blankly at the floor as his world burned to ash around him.
He wasn't a father to the child in Penelope's womb.
May you like
He was infertile.
And the two daughters he had spent eight years ignoring, dismissing, and finally abandoning without a second thought... were never his to begin with.
