Chapter 4 - The Shattered Mirage

Back in Dallas, the scene inside the Oakridge Maternity Clinic had devolved into total anarchy.
"Get out!" Michael shrieked, standing up from his chair and pointing a shaking finger at Penelope, who was weeping uncontrollably on the examination bed. "Get the hell out of my sight, you lying, cheating whore!"
"Michael, please!" Penelope sobbed, trying to grab his hand. "I made a mistake! It was just one night with my ex-boyfriend in May! I was lonely! I thought the baby was yours! Please, we can still raise it together!"
"Raise another man's child?!" Michael screamed, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. "I gave you a luxury apartment! I bought you designer bags! I destroyed my marriage for you!"
"You didn't destroy your marriage for her, Michael!" Rachel interjected, stepping up and grabbing her brother's arm, her voice harsh and panicked. "You destroyed your marriage because you wanted a son! But Doctor... what did you say about Michael? Infertility? That's impossible! Explain Lily and Maya!"
Dr. Carter calmly packed his documents into his leather briefcase. "I have already explained it, Miss Henderson. Science does not lie. Mr. Henderson has zero sperm production. He has had zero sperm production for at least five years, likely longer. The two children living with his ex-wife are biologically incapable of being his."
Arthur Henderson, Michael's father, suddenly felt his blood pressure spike. He grabbed the edge of a display cabinet to steady himself. "So... so those two little girls... Clara's daughters..."
"They aren't Hendersons," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling as her lifelong dream of family superiority crumbled into dust. "Clara... Clara cheated on him?"
"No," Ethan, Michael's younger brother, suddenly spoke up from the back of the room, looking at his smartphone with a pale, horrified expression. "Guys... you need to look at this right now."
Michael whipped around, his eyes wild. "Look at what?!"
Ethan held up his phone, showing an official press release that had just been published on the global Bloomberg Financial Network.
The headline read: BENNETT INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES SUCCESSION PLAN: CLARA BENNETT NAMED SOLE HEIRESS TO $4.2 BILLION HOTEL AND REAL ESTATE EMPIRE FOLLOWING INTERNATIONAL DIVORCE.
Below the headline was a high-resolution photograph of me, dressed in an elegant white silk suit, standing beside my grandfather on the terrace of a luxury estate in Nice, France.
Michael grabbed the phone from Ethan’s hands, his eyes rapidly scanning the article.
...Mrs. Clara Bennett, formerly married to Dallas real estate broker Michael Henderson, has returned to France following the formal execution of her divorce. Documents confirm Mrs. Bennett relinquished all local marital assets in exchange for sole, unencumbered custody of her two daughters, who are the exclusive lineage heirs to the Bennett fortune. Furthermore, Bennett International has initiated immediate corporate restructuring regarding domestic U.S. holdings...
Michael dropped the phone onto the floor. The screen cracked, but the text remained visible.
"Four... four point two billion dollars?" Rachel gasped, her voice barely a squeak. "Clara? The woman who wore off-brand clothes and cooked our Thanksgiving dinners? She's... she's a billionaire?"
"She wasn't a poor housewife," Arthur muttered, his hands trembling violently. "She was an heiress... and we spent ten years treating her like dirt."
Michael stood frozen in the middle of the room as the horrific magnitude of his failure slammed into his chest.
He had abandoned his quiet, loyal wife, who was secretly worth billions. He had signed away all rights to his daughters, who were now the sole heirs to an international fortune. He had traded his entire life, his family honor, and billions of dollars... for a mistress who had cheated on him with her ex-boyfriend and was carrying another man's child.
A sudden, sharp knock at the clinic door shattered the silence. Two uniformed Dallas sheriff's deputies stepped into the room, accompanied by a process server holding a thick stack of legal documents.
"Michael Henderson?" the process server asked neutrally.
Michael blinked slowly, staring at the officer. "Yes?"
"You've been officially served," the man said, handing the thick stack of papers directly into Michael's numb hands. "Notice of immediate commercial lease termination for Henderson Realty, emergency foreclosure filing on the downtown penthouse suite, and a formal civil summons from the legal firm representing Bennett International regarding ten years of audited misallocated marital funds."

Michael looked down at the documents, then up at his family, then at Penelope, who was still weeping on the bed.
His knees finally gave out entirely, and Michael Henderson collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor, clutching his papers as his mind shattered into a million pieces.
